Inspiration
As someone who’s hosted countless parties for family and friends across the US, I kept hitting the same pain points: scattered guest lists, guesswork on supplies, and hunting for reliable vendors. I wanted a one-stop tool that felt intuitive—like having a party planning buddy who speaks my language.
What it does
Party Planner Pro simplifies every step of party prep: generate curated theme ideas (think Retro Disco or Kids’ Carnival), manage guest RSVPs and dietary needs, calculate exact food/drink/decoration quantities (and budget!), and book trusted local vendors—all in a bright, easy-to-use interface.
How we built it
I started with wireframing the tab-based layout in Figma to prioritize user flow (Theme Generator → Guest Management → Supply Calculator → Vendor Booking). I coded the frontend with HTML/CSS/JavaScript and React for interactivity, using Bootstrap for responsive design. I focused on warm, festive colors (deep purple, soft gold) to match the celebratory vibe, and built static logic for core features to ensure smooth tab switching and action triggers (e.g., “Generate Theme” or “Calculate Supplies”).
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was balancing simplicity with functionality—avoiding clutter while including all must-have features. I also struggled with making the supply calculator’s budget estimates feel realistic (not just arbitrary numbers) without overcomplicating the UI. Tab state management in React took extra debugging to ensure only one panel showed at a time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The responsive, card-based design works flawlessly on both my phone (for on-the-go planning) and desktop (for detailed prep). The guest management section’s visual badges for dietary restrictions/RSVPs make at-a-glance tracking a breeze—friends who tested it said it eliminated their “party spreadsheet panic.”
What we learned
I deepened my React state management skills and learned to prioritize user experience over “cool” features. Most importantly, I realized how small, thoughtful design choices (like color contrast for accessibility or clear action buttons) make or break a tool for everyday users.
What's next for this project
First, I want to add dynamic supply calculations (so quantities adjust in real-time to guest count, not just static numbers). Next, integrate email templates for RSVPs, and partner with local vendors to make booking more seamless. Long-term, I hope to add a budget tracker and saveable party templates for repeat events (like annual birthday bashes!).
