Inspiration

Modern software development generates gigabytes of hidden build artifacts, package manager caches, and simulator logs daily:

  • Xcode: DerivedData, old Simulator symbols, stale Archives.
  • Android: Massive ~/.gradle/caches and build daemons.
  • Web: npm, pnpm, Yarn, and Bun global cache stores.
  • Backend & Systems: Rust Cargo target caches, Go build artifacts, Homebrew downloads. Generic Mac cleaners don't understand developer workflows—they either miss these directories entirely or risk deleting critical project dependencies. We built CleanExtraSpace as a 100% native macOS tool created specifically for developers to inspect, understand, and clean their development environments safely.

What it does

CleanExtraSpace is a dedicated developer environment cleaner:

  • Developer Ecosystem Deep Scan: Automatically detects and analyzes build caches across Xcode, Android/Gradle, Node/npm/pnpm/bun, Rust/Cargo, Go, and Homebrew.
  • Transparent Explanations: Tells you exactly what each cache is, why the tool created it, and what happens when you clean it.
  • Safety Ratings (SafetyGuard): Categorizes cleanable items with safety tiers (Very Safe, Safe, Review Recommended) so you never break an active build environment.
  • 1-Click Trash Recovery: Moves files to the macOS Trash rather than executing permanent rm -rf, allowing instant recovery if needed.
  • SwiftUI Native Experience: Blazing fast, lightweight, with direct "Reveal in Finder" actions to inspect any cache before cleaning.

How we built it

  • Swift & SwiftUI: Native architecture for zero-delay scans, minimal memory footprint, and seamless macOS integration.
  • Foundation & AppKit: Low-level filesystem inspection and asynchronous directory size calculation using modern Swift concurrency (async/await & Task groups).
  • SafetyGuard Engine: Built-in path validation and immutable system guards to guarantee safety for source code and system files.

Challenges we ran into

  • Recursive Directory Sizing: Efficiently calculating the size of deeply nested dev caches (like multi-gigabyte Gradle and node caches) without freezing the UI or draining battery.
  • Cache Lifecycle Mapping: Accurately identifying which developer caches are completely safe to wipe versus which might require a clean rebuild.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Sub-second scanning across multiple developer toolchains simultaneously.
  • Clean, intuitive native UI that fits seamlessly into macOS Sonoma and Sequoia.
  • Safely freeing dozens of gigabytes of developer cache clutter on our own machines in seconds.

What we learned

  • Developer Ecosystem Internals: Deepened our understanding of how different build systems (Xcode, Gradle, Cargo, Go, npm/Bun) manage cache invalidation, artifact lifecycles, and temporary file accumulation.
  • High-Performance Filesystem Traversal in Swift: Mastered non-blocking asynchronous file operations with Swift Task Groups and FileManager to scan tens of thousands of nested files without stuttering the 120Hz ProMotion UI.
  • Balancing Power & Safety: Learned how to design safety guardrails that give developers granular control and transparency over their environments without the risk of breaking active workflows.

What's next for CleanExtraSpace

  • Docker container, image, and volume cache pruning integration.
  • CLI companion tool (cleanextra in Terminal).
  • Automated menu-bar alerts when developer caches exceed custom limits.
