Inspiration
We noticed that elders and post-operative patients often lose motivation to stay active—especially on weekends—when formal physiotherapy sessions are unavailable. Many digital rehab tools fail to engage them, and accessibility for visually impaired users is rarely prioritized. We wanted to make rehabilitation both fun and inclusive, turning exercise into something people actually look forward to.
What it does
Parmi is a mobile-friendly web app that transforms simple rehab movements into an interactive experience:
- Users hold their phone and perform exercises (like lateral raises).
- The phone’s gyroscope tracks their repetitions.
- Each rep colors in a picture on the screen a little more.
- By the end of the workout, the picture is fully revealed, creating a sense of achievement.
- Accessibility feature: each rep also plays a beat sound, so visually impaired users can track their progress through audio.
Challenges we ran into
- Calibrating gyroscope accuracy so unintentional movements didn’t count as reps.
- Handling cross-device differences in motion sensitivity.
- Designing audio cues that were distinct, pleasant, and synced with visuals.
- Building everything under hackathon time constraints.
What we learned
- How to process real-time gyroscope data in browsers.
- The value of inclusive design early in development.
- That simple, fun interactions can make exercise more appealing.
- Effective teamwork under high-pressure conditions.
What's next for Parmi
- Incorporating a wider range of exercises — Expanding beyond simple arm movements to include a full library of rehab-friendly exercises tailored to different recovery needs.
- Connecting with hardware companies — Partnering with physiotherapy device manufacturers to integrate their equipment directly with our software for more accurate tracking and richer feedback.
- Evolving into a long-term rehab program — Shifting from one-off workout sessions to a structured, multi-week rehabilitation plan that tracks progress, adapts exercises over time, and keeps users engaged throughout recovery.
