How we built it

ParkX is built using a modern mobile-first architecture, real-time IoT sensors, secure cloud APIs, and a powerful backend to deliver instant parking availability, booking, and navigation.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Real-Time Parking Accuracy

Integrating IoT sensors and ensuring they send instant and reliable data was difficult. We had to handle sensor delays, connectivity issues, and avoid incorrect “false occupancy” readings.

  1. Preventing Double Booking

Multiple users often tried to book the same slot at the same time. We needed to implement slot locking, transaction handling, and conflict resolution to stop duplicate reservations.

  1. Complex Integration with Google Maps

Displaying thousands of parking markers, clustering them, and ensuring smooth map performance required heavy optimization. Location accuracy and navigation integration also needed careful handling.

  1. Payment Gateway Failures

UPI and card transactions sometimes timed out or returned inconsistent responses. We had to support:

retries

webhook-based confirmation

payment state recovery

  1. ANPR Accuracy & Lighting Conditions

Automatic number plate recognition struggled with:

low lighting

angled plates

dirty/obstructed plates

We needed fallback systems like QR scanning.

  1. Managing Sensor Data at Scale

High-frequency MQTT messages created spikes in traffic. We needed Redis caching and WebSocket optimization to avoid slow UI updates.

  1. Designing Slot Layouts for Each Parking Lot

Each lot has a unique layout, numbering system, and slot types. Standardizing this for a general system was challenging.

  1. Ensuring Seamless User Experience

Balancing:

map screen

slot details

booking flow

payment flow

navigation

…while keeping the UI simple and beginner-friendly required extensive UX refinement.

  1. Admin Dashboard Complexity

Admins needed:

live status

revenue graphs

slot controls

price rules

sensor health

Bringing all this into a clean dashboard required careful planning.

  1. Scalability & High Traffic

During peak hours (malls, offices, airports), user traffic increased drastically. We needed auto-scaling and optimized database queries to keep performance stable

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Built a Fully Functional Smart Parking System

We successfully created an end-to-end platform that allows users to find, reserve, navigate, and pay for parking—all in one seamless flow.

  1. Integrated Real-Time IoT Sensor Updates

We implemented live parking slot status using MQTT/WebSockets, enabling instant updates when a slot becomes free or occupied.

  1. Solved the Congestion Problem with Accurate Availability

ParkX helps reduce parking search time by showing real-time availability, dramatically improving user experience in high-traffic areas.

  1. Implemented Secure and Smooth Payment System

We integrated UPI, cards, wallets, and payment gateway support with auto-updated reservation status, ensuring a reliable transaction flow.

  1. Eliminated Double Booking with Smart Slot Locking

Our backend logic ensures that once a user chooses a slot, it is safely locked until payment is completed—no more conflicts.

  1. Created an Intuitive & Clean UI/UX

We designed a modern, map-first interface with easy navigation, interactive slot grids, and a smooth booking flow suitable for all age groups.

  1. Developed an Advanced Admin Dashboard

Operators can monitor:

  live occupancy

  revenue

  sensor health

  pricing rules

…all in real-time through a fully functional admin console.

  1. Implemented ANPR for Automated Entry/Exit

We integrated number plate recognition to allow users to enter and exit without scanning QR codes—making the system faster and more convenient.

  1. Achieved High Performance & Scalability

Through caching, optimized queries, and cloud-ready deployment, ParkX is capable of handling heavy traffic during events or peak hours.

  1. Built a Scalable and Flexible System Architecture

The entire system—frontend, backend, sensors, admin, payment—is designed modularly, making expansion and feature updates easy

What we learned

  1. Importance of Real-Time Systems

We learned how challenging and critical it is to handle real-time data using sensors, MQTT, and WebSockets—especially when accurate slot status directly impacts user trust.

  1. How to Build a Scalable Architecture

Designing ParkX taught us how to structure backend systems with:

caching

load balancing

microservices

PostGIS for geolocation to handle thousands of users smoothly.

We realized the power of clean UI/UX. Even the smartest backend fails if users cannot easily:

find a slot

book a slot

complete a payment Clear navigation and flow design became a major learning point.

  1. Handling Concurrency & Race Conditions

We understood how complex it is to prevent double booking. Implementing slot locking, transactions, and atomic writes taught us real-world concurrency control.

  1. Working with Third-Party Integrations

Integrating Google Maps, payment gateways, and ANPR systems taught us how to manage:

API limits

inconsistent responses

webhook handling
