Inspiration
As a team we looked at the common issues that people are facing in their day to day lives. We noticed that traffic is one of the main ones and is caused by many leading factors, like the search for parking space. We knew this was a problem that needed to be fixed as it also damaged the environment in several harmful ways.
What it does
Our product, a mobile app called ParkSmart - allows the user to find a parking spot efficiently. They can simply input the address of their destination and get fast and updated results for nearby parking. This is possible through our development of sensors which track the total number of parking space as well as the ones that are available. This app also works offline which allows users to use it when they do not have access to internet connection.
How we built it
After creating a figma prototype to layout the components we wanted to include, we started coding it in Android Studio with the Flutter and Dart plug-ins to create our app.
Challenges we ran into
It was difficult to find a way to link the database we used with the map functionality in our app as it was our first time doing so, and it took a lot of time and research.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We learned to use different platforms such as Android Studio and figma for our prototype creations. We focused on creating a good product rather than prizes and formal accomplishment, and made sure we learned from this wonderful experience! For some of us this was our first hackathon and it definitely inspired us to attend more hackathons in the future!
What we learned
We learned that there are many ways to solve issues in transportation and sustainability and even the smallest changes (like a parking app) can make a big difference to the environment and peoples' lives. Our company EcoTech found this experience very helpful and important as it has inspired us to continue innovating and finding creative ways to help the environment!
What's next for ParkSmart
We want to be able to expand our target market to reach more countries to reduce traffic congestion in a larger amount. Additionally, we want to be able to improve on our sensor system to make sure that we are providing the most accurate information to the users. This will make sure there isn't crowding and traffic near parking spots if the data is updated.
