Inspiration

Montreal is a beautiful city with a rich history, a multidiverse community, and a vibrant culture. However, every motorist knows all too well the living hell that is parking, especially downtown. This problem, which until now has been left unchecked and unresolved, has grown from being a simple irritation to an actual hurdle for social and economic development. People simply don't bother physically going shopping to save themselves from the pain of finding a parking spot. With Parkr, we aim to provide a solution in the hopes of saving time and money for our users.

What it does

Parkr allows its users to enter their destination address and find parking spots nearby through machine learning. By subscribing to become a Peter, the user can unlock additional features on parking restrictions such as allowed parking time, reserved spots, etc.

How we built it

Front-end:

  • HTML&CSS
  • JavaScript Back-end:
  • JavaScript
  • Google Maps API
  • Leaflet API (open-source JavaScript)

Challenges we ran into

In general, it was hard to deeply understand and code most of HTML and JavaScript as we have almost never done them before. However, one thing that really made us lose our minds was connecting the user input from the search bar to the map itself.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the UI of the website and our resilience through these 36 hours.

What we learned

We learned a great deal about HTML and CSS, their functionalities, and how to properly use them. We are now able to correctly build web pages in a way that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Another thing we became competent in is integrating and using an API.

What's next for Parkr

As the next step for Parkr, we want to focus on improving the determination of the availability of the shown parking spots. We decided to approach this using user-generated data where information will be recorded whenever a user arrives at or leaves a parking spot. As an endpoint, we would like to migrate from a web-based service to a mobile application to improve usability.
