Inspiration

We have noticed how packed the engineering and student union parking lot can get. Due to this issue, many people spend upwards of 15 minutes or more following people to take their parking spot, only to lose it to someone who was at the right place at the right time. Because of this, I, Mark Gonzalez, would drive up to the engineering building and pick up people and take them to their parking spot myself. Doing this gave me a parking spot within 5 minutes of arriving at school.

What it does

Our website is a demo that applies to the engineering parking lot. Using this website students can put that they are looking for a parking spot and they will be added to a waitlist. Then while a student walks to their car, they can input their vehicle information after clicking "leaving". This car information will be sent to the 1st person in line that is searching for parking. By doing this, only one person searching for a vehicle will know what car to wait by.

How we built it

We built it using HTML and Photoshop.

Challenges we ran into

Well, within the first 4 hours of the 1st day our backend had a family emergency and had to leave. Because everyone else, including myself, in the group, is new, we were put at a huge disadvantage. Knowing this we chose to focus on building a concept so we had a finished project. Another issue we found was adjusting the coordinates of an image using HTML. Our workaround for that was using Photoshop and integrating those images as a template. Due to this being our first time at a hackathon we went in with an idea and stuck with it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to prioritize providing a demo website to give a proof of concept, instead of freaking out when our team member left. As a group, we analyzed that having a front-end concept was more important than a back end, and due to us being new we had to work together. As a group, we were able to explain our code and share it with each other for review. Another accomplishment was us being able to integrate and try different forms of front-end code to try different things and experiment.

What's next for Parking Problem

  • You have to sign in with your parking permit ID. This will automatically have every data about the vehicle you will need.
  • You will be able to choose what parking lot you are leaving and what lot you are searching a spot for. -You will be able to pick people to pick up through the app to take them to their parking spot. -For safety reasons, if the driver leaves the campus within a 3-mile radius the campus police will be notified of their car information.
