Inspiration
On average, people spend over $3000 a year on parking. That is a waste of your money with how many driveways and reserved parking spots go unused. Our mission statement is to prioritize and support our community, and doing so by providing them a more reliable and cheaper method of parking.
What it does
It allows users to rent out their parking spaces to other users in the community. It also allows users to see if and where there is free parking available nearby.
How we built it
We developed the app on Flutter using VSCode as our primary IDE. By doing this we have created an App that is compatible to run on both Android and iOS. We are using Google's Firebase Authentication for handling sign-in/ups and Google's Firebase Firestore for storing the details like location, price, etc. We used Github extensively to manage version control and group collaboration.
Challenges we ran into
For most of us, it was the first time we worked with Flutter and Firebase, and hence getting familiar with the platform took us a little bit of time. Development was done on three different architectures and operating systems - Windows (android), macOS (arm), macOS (intel) and ensuring consistent user experiences between all platforms posed challenges.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Really proud that we were able to quickly catch up with Flutter and develop a functioning application within 36 hours. We collaborated as a team, had fun, and gained a lot of experience.
What we learned
Managing multiple architectures and operating systems with a big code base is a difficult task. Also, Having a UI/UX Designer would have helped in quicker design decisions.
What's next for Parking Pal
Adding the functionality of multiple localities and implementing a payment system such that payments can go through within the app.
