Inspiration
Parenting toddlers is hard — tantrums, sleep resistance, picky eating, and constant uncertainty. New parents often feel overwhelmed and don’t have time to read long articles or sift through forums. We wanted to create something that feels like a calm coach in your pocket, guiding you in the moment with simple, evidence-based steps.
What it does
Parently is an AI-powered parenting assistant for children ages 0–5. • Crisis to Calm: Quick, step-by-step guidance for tantrums, meltdowns, and other stressful moments. • Daily Insights: Personalized one-line tips based on your child’s age, sleep, meals, and routines. • Smart Search: Ask natural questions like “What games can I play with my 2-year-old?” and get concise, age-appropriate answers.
How we built it • Frontend: React Native (Expo) for a simple, mobile-first experience. • Backend: AWS Lambda with API Gateway, connected to Amazon Bedrock for Claude-powered parenting guidance. • Data: DynamoDB for lightweight storage of child age, basic routines, and activity logs. • Infra: Terraform for fast and repeatable deployment of cloud resources.
Challenges we ran into • Designing prompts that give short, safe, JSON-only responses from the LLM. • Balancing personalization with privacy (no heavy data collection). • Creating a UI that feels calm and supportive, not overwhelming. • Debugging AWS Bedrock + Lambda connections and managing model outputs.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of • Built a working end-to-end pipeline from mobile app → Lambda → Bedrock → back to mobile in just days. • Designed a “Crisis to Calm” feature that turns tantrums into step-by-step calming actions. • Created a structure that allows both quick tips and deeper insights without overwhelming the parent. • Kept everything serverless, scalable, and low-cost.
What we learned • Prompt engineering is as important as app engineering. • Parents need just-in-time support, not long lectures. • Small logs (sleep, meals, moods) can give big personalization wins. • Building AI apps requires balancing empathy, safety, and tech constraints.
What’s next for Parently • Expanding guidance beyond tantrums to include milestone tracking and activity suggestions. • Adding offline mode for quick preloaded tips. • Partnering with pediatric experts to refine responses. • Exploring multi-language support to reach global parents. • Building a premium tier with personalized growth insights and daily routines.
