Inspiration

We drew inspiration from observing the struggles of first-time parents around us. One common challenge that stood out was the issue of low breast milk supply experienced by many mothers during breastfeeding. This problem led us to consider ways to support both mothers with low breast milk supply and those experiencing hyperlactation. Additionally, we recognized that both mothers and fathers play essential roles in child growth, and their shared struggles needed a supportive platform.

What It Does

Parentie creates a supportive network that connects mothers with low breast milk supply to those with hyperlactation. Through our personalized profiles and chat feature, parents are encouraged to reach out, communicate, and form agreements to share breast milk, ensuring that every baby gets the nourishment they need. This platform not only facilitates the exchange of breast milk but also fosters a community of support and understanding among parents. Furthermore, Parentie includes a Forum feature to support both mothers and fathers. In the discussion section, parents can ask and answer questions, gaining insights from other parents. The event section allows users to share and find information about parenting and childcare events, helping them participate in and benefit from the community.

How We Built It

We developed Parentie using a full-stack Django framework, enhancing the interface with Tailwind CSS. For deployment, we utilized Vercel, ensuring smooth and efficient delivery of our application. We also integrated Supabase as our backend database solution, providing a seamless and scalable way to manage user data and interactions.

Challenges We Ran Into

As we addressed this issue based on the experiences of people around us, we realized that we were just as uncertain as they were in finding a solution that could help more individuals. We needed to seek advice from others for a better understanding and explore new perspectives. On the development side, one of the biggest challenges we faced was implementing a chat feature, something we had never done before. This feature is crucial for facilitating real-time communication and support among parents, but it requires us to learn and integrate new technologies and strategies.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

We’re proud that we successfully completed everything we planned within the span of 36 hours or less. By focusing on developing a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), we ensured that we could deliver a functional and impactful application within the tight timeline. Our team efficiently collaborated and quickly overcame challenges. This achievement showcases our dedication, teamwork, and ability to deliver high-quality solutions under pressure.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned the importance of effective team collaboration and communication, especially under time constraints. We also gained valuable insights into user experience design and how to prioritize features for an MVP. Additionally, we deepened our understanding of integrating various technologies, such as real-time chat functionalities and scalable backend solutions.

What’s next for our project

There are still many areas where our app can expand to provide even more support. Given the numerous requirements for becoming a breast milk donor, we aim to facilitate the health checks for potential donors. By offering a feature that connects users with health check services, we can ensure that donors meet all necessary health criteria, making the process safer and more reliable for everyone involved. This addition will enhance the trust and efficacy of the Parentie network, further supporting parents in their journey.
