Inspiration

Family care rarely lives in one place. Meals may be remembered, sleep is written in a message, medication sits in a note, activities live in a calendar, and the next caregiver still has to ask: "What happened today?"

I built Parenthink to reduce that mental load. The goal is not to turn family life into a spreadsheet or make medical judgments. It is to give parents and trusted caregivers one calm, private place to record everyday care, understand the week, and see what matters next.

What it does

Parenthink brings care tracking, family planning, and practical guidance together across iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

Parents can:

  • Record meals and feeding, pumping, sleep, growth, medication, vaccines, homework, activities, Family Notes, and custom routines.
  • Speak or type an update into the on-device Care Assistant, review the proposed tracker draft, and decide what to save. Nothing is saved automatically.
  • Build activity checklists, recurring routines, reminders, and meal plans.
  • Review a factual Weekly Family Brief that combines recent care and upcoming plans without diagnosing or prescribing.
  • Explore 55 parenting guides and 45 family recipes in English, Indonesian, and Thai.
  • Keep data local first, create an optional private iCloud backup, and—when the owner chooses—share one editable family workspace with trusted caregivers.
  • Use widgets, Live Activities, and an Apple Watch companion to keep important care information close at hand.

Core care recording remains useful without a subscription. Premium funds recurring family value such as additional children, Weekly Family Brief, advanced growth context, family-workspace management, Apple Watch tracking, Nearby Schools, and deeper guides. RevenueCat manages Parenthink's products, offerings, purchases, restoration, and Premium entitlement.

How we built it

Parenthink is a native Apple-platform app built with Swift and SwiftUI. SwiftData provides the local-first persistence layer. CloudKit powers optional private backup and the family workspace, while the app keeps an explicit local repository and synchronization path so a network failure does not block everyday recording.

The Apple Watch companion uses WatchConnectivity, with the paired iPhone remaining the data authority. WidgetKit and ActivityKit provide glanceable widgets and local Live Activities. RevenueCat handle subscription purchasing and entitlement state. Sign in with Apple is optional, and supported Care Assistant interpretation uses Apple's on-device Foundation Models with an explicit review-before-save flow.

The product was built iteratively. Version 1.0 established the family record, trackers, planning, guidance, privacy model, and Premium foundation. Later releases improved recurring activities, reminder control, Care Assistant capture, promotional-code redemption, Watch usability, and live care status without weakening the free core experience.

Challenges we faced

Protecting data while enabling collaboration

Family information can be sensitive. The difficult part was not simply syncing records; it was preserving a dependable local experience, supporting offline changes, handling backup and restoration, and making shared-workspace transitions understandable without silently discarding a family's existing local data.

Making intelligent capture trustworthy

A care assistant can save time, but it should never invent or silently persist health-related information. Parenthink therefore interprets supported text on device, presents a structured draft, falls back safely when uncertain, and always leaves the final save to the user.

Drawing a fair Premium boundary

Care history should not become inaccessible because a subscription expires. Parenthink keeps core recording, editing, deletion, reminders, meal planning, and private backup useful for free users. Premium is reserved for additional and recurring value rather than artificial logging quotas.

Serving families beyond one life stage

The app needed to work for more than the baby years without becoming unfocused. A shared child context connects daily care, routines, meals, growth, and age-aware guidance while keeping the next action clear.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Shipped a real, native family-care product rather than a prototype.
  • Created one coherent workflow across iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, widgets, and Live Activities.
  • Localized the interface and substantive content in English, Indonesian, and Thai.
  • Built a review-first, on-device Care Assistant instead of sending family-care text to a server.
  • Preserved unlimited core records and user control over editing and deletion.
  • Integrated RevenueCat into a sustainable subscription model that matches the product's values.

What we learned

The strongest improvement was repeatedly choosing clarity over breadth. Fast capture only matters if the resulting record is trustworthy. A summary only matters if it helps the next caregiver act. Premium only works when users can understand the recurring family outcome it provides.

We also learned that privacy is not a settings-page claim. It shapes the architecture, synchronization model, assistant behavior, screenshots, analytics choices, and even which growth experiments are acceptable.

What's next

Next, Parenthink will continue improving family handoffs, care capture, accessibility, localization quality, and the usefulness of weekly understanding. Product decisions will remain evidence-driven: observe where caregivers lose time or confidence, improve that workflow, and measure whether the result genuinely makes family coordination calmer.

Parenthink's promise stays simple: less mental load, more family clarity.
