Inspiration We noticed that while schools offer platforms for formal communication between parents and teachers, there’s a lack of informal, parent-to-parent networking. Many parents struggle to coordinate playdates, homework help, carpools, or even just share advice. We wanted to create a safe and friendly space where parents of school-going kids could connect, collaborate, and support one another.

What it does ParentBuddy connects parents whose children go to the same school or class. They can:

Join class-specific groups

Chat with other parents

Coordinate events

Share resources, reminders, or tips

Create smaller groups (e.g., for extracurriculars)

It helps build a stronger parent community around each school.

How we built it - We built ParentBuddy using:

Frontend: React Native with Expo for a cross-platform mobile experience.

Backend: Node.js with Express and Firebase for real-time data and authentication.

Database: Firestore for dynamic, scalable data storage.

Authentication: Firebase Auth with email/OTP login for ease of use.

Design: Tailored a clean, friendly UI using Figma and implemented it with reusable components.

Challenges we ran into Ensuring user privacy while enabling easy discovery of other parents.

Designing a UX that’s both simple and intuitive for non-tech-savvy users.

Structuring real-time group chats efficiently without overloading the backend.

Moderating and preventing misuse in community features like group chats or events.

Accomplishments that we're proud of - Built a fully functional prototype in a short time span.

Designed a clean, mobile-first interface that received great initial feedback from test users.

Enabled real-time messaging and group creation with privacy filters.

Created a strong brand identity around ParentBuddy that resonates with our audience.

What we learned - Parents are incredibly eager to connect — but only in trusted, moderated environments.

Importance of onboarding and explaining features simply.

Scalability and UX need to go hand-in-hand from day one, especially in community-focused apps.

Building trust is key — from tone of copy to login flow to group moderation tools.

What's next for ParentBuddy - Launching beta testing with a few local schools.

Adding features like event scheduling, announcement boards, and polls.

Building a referral system for organic growth.

Partnering with schools and PTAs for endorsement and integration.

Exploring AI-based moderation and smart notifications for parent engagement.
