With the growing accessibility of the internet, children oftentimes have access to sites that are inappropriate for them. This means that younger audiences are exposed to content that can stunt their mental development when growing up. Thus, we decided to make a chrome extension that can be easy for parents to use along with providing them useful insight into the content that their kids are reading on the internet.
Our Parent Web Tracking extension executes a script that runs discreetly in the background of your child’s chrome browsing - collecting keywords in articles that could be deemed as inappropriate content. The initial idea of this extension was to have a fully fleshed out User interface where the parent can input keywords they don’t want their child to see, and the chrome extension would pop out alerts and prevent access to any websites with a certain threshold of these words. However, due to time constraints, we settled on a simple, super lightweight extension.
Building off of Kyle Young’s project We decided upon 4 words that we think are inappropriate (HIGHLIGHT ON SCREEN). You start this extension when your kid sits on the computer and as they peruse different websites the extension will look for and track these 4 different words and record its findings discretely in the background. At the end of your kid’s session, you can have a fully compiled report of each url your kid visited and a breakdown of each word and the number of occurrences allowing you to block/ban any inappropriate URL that your child is visiting.
