Inspiration

Our team was inspired by the desire to take augmented reality gaming to another level. Our inspiration started off simply with an interest in the use of AR to detect body movement through our device's cameras. Then Building off that, we thought about how cool it would be if we could play games with our friends and families while on a video call and that was how Parcade was born. We were inspired to make a petit arcade (see what we did there?) that didn't require too much tech and was easily accessible so that people could play games and have fun anywhere and anytime even if they were miles apart.

What it does

It adds a digital element to the camera on your device to create an image of a game you can interact with. The program tracks the users' hands which are used to interact with the game interface

How we built it

We built the program using a machine-learning model with Python that handles camera detections. Furthermore, using HTML, JavaScript, and CSS we created a website that introduces the users to the interface and lists the games available.

Challenges we ran into

Going into the project, we had a team member who didn't have a lot of coding experience so he was learning everything from scratch as we built the project. Additionally, we started building our project in python but later realized that putting it on a website would be difficult because of the language so we now have different programs in python and Javascript. Furthermore, we struggled with coming up with games to integrate into our program.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Through the course of the hackathon, we learned a lot about machine learning and AR, Java, and teamwork, amongst a variety of things, and can say with confidence that we are coming out with more knowledge than we did coming in. We also stayed positive and persistently kept working even though at times getting the work done was tough.

What we learned

We learned more about how to make a website using HTML and javascript. We increased our knowledge of machine learning using python and javascript. Last but not least. we learned that when working in a team, there can be differences in knowledge, and if you are accepting of that and work with your teammates, you can learn a lot and have fun in the process.

What's next for Parcade?

We want to integrate more games onto our platform so that users have a variety of games to pick from. Additionally, we want to explore how to combine our program with video calling services so that users can play regardless of if they're together or not. We will also explore making our program an application.
