Inspiration
India’s cultural heritage spans thousands of years, preserved in palm-leaf manuscripts, temple inscriptions, folk songs, and oral traditions. Sadly, much of this knowledge is fading due to physical decay, lost scripts, and limited accessibility. We were inspired to create a project that not only digitizes this heritage but also revives it with Agentic AI — making it understandable, interactive, and accessible to every generation in every language.
What it does
ParamparaSmritiAI is an AI Heritage Guardian that:
- Digitizes manuscripts & inscriptions using OCR fine-tuned for Indian scripts.
- Restores damaged or incomplete texts with Generative AI.
- Translates heritage into multiple Indian & global languages.
- Archives folk songs/oral traditions with speech-to-text + music analysis.
- Contextualizes texts with cultural/historical explanations.
- Creates interactive storytelling experiences — where students, researchers, and the public can explore heritage in engaging formats.
How we built it
- OCR models fine-tuned for Devanagari, Tamil-Brahmi, Grantha, and other Indian scripts.
- NLP + Translation pipelines trained for multilingual support.
- Generative AI used for restoration, narrative storytelling, and contextual explanations.
- An interactive learning portal with search, summaries, audio narration, and quizzes.
- Speech-to-text pipelines to archive folk songs and oral traditions.
Challenges we ran into
- Processing faded manuscripts and rare scripts.
- Ensuring accurate, culturally sensitive translations across languages.
- Avoiding distortion while using AI to reconstruct incomplete heritage.
- Designing a system that is equally useful for scholars, educators, and the general public.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Building a prototype that can digitize and translate ancient manuscripts.
- Successfully creating interactive cultural learning modules.
- Bridging India’s timeless traditions with cutting-edge AI technology.
- Demonstrating that AI can be a preserver of culture, not just a disruptor.
What we learned
- The power of combining OCR, NLP, and Generative AI for real-world cultural preservation.
- The importance of contextual AI—translation must capture meaning, not just words.
- That heritage is not just data to be stored, but stories to be told and shared.
- How technology can connect generations by making ancient knowledge accessible in modern formats.
What's next for ParamparaSmritiAI
- Expand OCR coverage to more regional scripts & dialects.
- Collaborate with museums, libraries, and cultural institutions for large-scale adoption.
- Add VR/AR experiences to let users virtually “walk through” heritage sites and texts.
- Develop a community-driven, open-source heritage archive where people can contribute cultural data.
- Extend the model beyond India to global heritage preservation, starting with India as the foundation.
