Inspiration
After seeing the winner of the Reply AI festival "Love at First Sight", I wanted to make a coming-of-age film with no dialogue, focusing on the human connections we have in relation to attraction.
What it does
Parallel Lives aims to capture the daily lives of two strangers who always get the same train. They are attracted to each other but neither person really makes a move until fate steps in. It is meant to be relateable and down-to-Earth because lots of us have seen inspiration in the movies but when we experience a moment ourselves, we rarely do anything about it.
How we built it
I used Seedream 4.0, Veo 3 and Kling. All editing was done inside CapCut.
Challenges we ran into
I wanted to get lots of close up shots to capture the emotions but this had to be limited because perfect character consistency was hard to achieve. I also wanted there to be an additional scene of the girl dropping something accidentally and the boy picking it up for her, however asking the AI to accidentally show something proved very difficult and would have taken away the film's realism.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I feel the pacing of the movie lines up perfectly with the music. I am passionate about music and took me just as long to find the right music as it did to produce the film. I feel the characters are well-designed and accurately represents two normal people on their commutes. I like the variety of camera angles and shots.
What we learned
I learned that you don't always have to use dialogue to produce a good movie. Emotions can be captured simply by using scenes in a smart way and encouraging the viewer to imagine what they are thinking. I really went for "less is more" in this film.
What's next for Parallel Lives
In my next films, I want to be bolder and maybe include more twists and turns in the plot to add more complexity.
