NOTE - WRITEN BY ME, POLISHED BY CHATGPT

Inspiration

Parallel started from a very simple conversation with a friend of mine who is in a long-distance relationship.

Whenever we would sit together for lunch or just hang out, he would sometimes say something like:

“I wish I could know what she is doing right now without disturbing her.”

That stayed in my mind.

Long-distance couples already have messaging apps, video calls, social media, and plenty of ways to communicate. But most of those tools require one person to actively start a conversation.

Sometimes you don't want to call.

Sometimes there is nothing important enough to send a message about.

You just want to feel like you are there.

You want to know what your partner's morning looked like, what they saw while walking outside, what they were eating, what made them laugh, or what their evening felt like.

That became the idea behind Parallel.

Instead of asking couples to constantly talk more, we wanted to help them quietly experience more of each other's everyday life.

What it does

Parallel is a private app for couples that lets both partners share small 5-second video moments throughout their day.

Whenever something feels worth sharing, you simply record five seconds.

It doesn't have to be important.

It could be:

  • your morning coffee
  • the view outside your window
  • walking to work
  • lunch with friends
  • rain outside
  • your commute home
  • your dog doing something funny
  • or simply your face at the end of a long day

Your partner can do the same from wherever they are. Parallel brings both perspectives together.

For the same moment in the day, both partners' videos can be shown side by side, so instead of only seeing what one person was doing, you experience both lives happening at the same time.

One person might be sitting in a crowded café in Mumbai while the other is walking home in Delhi. Two completely different places. At the end of the day, Parallel turns all of those small clips into something bigger.

If a couple shares multiple moments throughout the day, Parallel automatically organizes them chronologically from morning to night and creates a Relive Your Day experience.

Both partners' videos are played together, side by side. So instead of scrolling through separate clips, couples can watch their entire day unfold together.

Morning. Afternoon. Evening. Night.

We are also bringing parts of their relationship into the recap, including things such as chat messages and moods, so the final experience feels less like a video gallery and more like a memory of the day.

Our goal is simple: One shared moment.

How we built it

We first finalized the product idea, name, domain, and UI/UX, then started building the app in Flutter.

We use Firebase for authentication, Firestore, and video storage, Isar for local offline-first storage, and RevenueCat for subscriptions.

Challenges we ran into

Building Parallel looked simple at first.

“Record five seconds and show two videos together.”

In practice, that idea created a surprising number of technical and product challenges. Parallel frequently needs to play two independent videos at exactly the same time.

They need to:

  • start together
  • stop together
  • transition together
  • mute together
  • remain synchronized as the user moves through different moments

Even a small timing difference becomes noticeable when the videos are displayed side by side.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The thing we are most proud of is that Parallel has evolved from a simple emotional observation into a real, working product architecture.

Some milestones we are especially proud of:

Turning a tiny interaction into the core product

The entire experience starts with just five seconds.

There is no pressure to make content, create a perfect post, or explain what is happening.

That simplicity is important to us.

Building Relive Your Day

Relive Your Day has become the feature that best represents Parallel.

Individual moments are valuable, but seeing both partners' entire day unfold together turns those small clips into something emotional.

Designing for real relationship behavior

We spent significant time thinking beyond the happy path.

Disconnecting does not immediately destroy memories.

Reconnecting should restore history.

Deleting one account should not accidentally destroy the other person's account.

These details may not appear in a marketing screenshot, but they matter deeply in a product that stores personal relationship memories.

Building a strong local-first architecture

Rather than treating offline support as something to add later, we designed local storage, queues, background synchronization, retries, and recovery into the product.

Creating organic sharing inside the product

The exported Relive experience is also becoming part of Parallel's growth loop.

When a couple shares their Relive video on Instagram, TikTok, or elsewhere, the video itself demonstrates what Parallel does.

We are designing the ending carefully so it feels like an emotional signature rather than an advertisement.

Something like:

A day worth remembering.
Captured together.

followed by the couple's names, date, days together, shared moments, and subtle Parallel branding.

The product becomes its own marketing.

What we learned

The biggest thing we learned is that building an emotional consumer product is very different from building a utility app.

I have spent years building mobile applications, but Parallel has forced us to think much more deeply about behavior and emotion.

Small moments can be more meaningful than big features

Originally it is tempting to keep adding features.

More messaging.

More reactions.

More customization.

But the strongest part of Parallel remains incredibly simple:

What are you seeing right now?

Five seconds can sometimes communicate something a long message cannot.

What's next for Parallel

Our immediate goal is to finish the core experience, launch Parallel publicly, and get it into the hands of real couples.

The next major steps include:

Finish and polish Relive Your Day

We want the final Relive experience to feel almost like a tiny movie of the couple's day.

That includes:

  • smoother transitions
  • playful chat overlays
  • mood presentation
  • better missing-partner states
  • stronger ending credits

- reliable social-video export
