The inspiration
We were inspired by the idea of using ECL to help people find their ideal home location because it allowed us to gain experience using large datafiles with a cluster. Working with serves has always been an interest of our team which is why learning about the HPCC challenge was very inspiring to us.
What we learned
We learn a lot about the nature of using code to evaluate datasets, such as what sort of attributes to look for and how to approach them. Additionally we gained invaluable experience working with servers using ECL and hope that this will be a helpful skill in the future.
How we built out project
We built out project by first determining the informational analysis of each category (Health,Crime, Weather, and Education) and then coding the results to visualize the analysis. This was built using ECL in combination with many extremely large dataset provided by HPCC. Ultimately we all really enjoyed the process and it was very interesting seeing the results of our analysis.
The challenges we faced
The hardest aspect of this project was having to learn an entire new coding language in just a day. ECL is not object-oriented which made it very confusing at first. Furthermore it was challenging learning about all the different file types we had to work with and how to communicate with a server while doing the needed operations for our analysis.
