Inspiration

About 20 years ago, we were discussing video game ideas at work (I worked at video game maker Eidos back then, the publisher of Tomb Raider), and the name Sim Psycho was suggested. It was quickly brainstormed that the killer should be the same as the detective. The idea being that the killer's scenes would be bright and fluffy, and the detectives' dark and gritty, and everything would be shot first person, so the identity would be unclear. This slowly morphed into this musical.

What it does

We aimed to create songs that correspond to emotions. This one is the fear emotion, for reference the next song is happiness for interesting musical contrasts.

How we built it

This is largely built with Fal. We get a reference picture for each character, as well as a file full of text descriptions for scenes and characters, and generate a still. This is then often edited before we convert it to a video. We'll iterate on prompts recursively until we arrive at outcomes we like. Often, video clips are cropped or adjusted, and sometimes we use more extreme editing techniques. Sometimes we also use start and end frames when generating.

Challenges we ran into

The main issue with this video is balancing the desire to scare with YouTube's constraints and good taste.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We've not tried this art style before, and it came out well.

What we learned

This specific video was our first foray into horror, so we had to build up slowly to a climax. We felt the result turned out better if we kept it natural and hid the killer.
