Inspiration
Starting a new job can be overwhelming, especially when meetings are filled with unfamiliar corporate jargon. New employees may be hesitant to interrupt a meeting to ask what something means, which can leave them confused or behind. We wanted to turn that problem into an opportunity for learning. Paradigm Shift transforms everyday workplace conversations into personalized learning material.
What it does
Paradigm Shift takes a meeting recording, transcribes the conversation, identifies important corporate jargon, and explains each term in simple language. It then turns those terms into quizzes and flashcards so users can practice and track their understanding over time.
Our goal is simple: Listen → Understand → Practice → Master.
How we built it
We built the frontend using Flutter and Dart and the backend using Python and FastAPI. We use Azure AI Speech for speech-to-text and Azure OpenAI to identify jargon and generate definitions and learning content. We also integrated Azure SQL Database to store user and learning data. Our code is managed through GitHub.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was connecting multiple technologies together while keeping the application simple and reliable. We had to figure out how to move audio from the Flutter frontend to our FastAPI backend, process the recording, and return useful information to the user. We also had to learn how to work with Azure services and handle different audio formats.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we turned a real workplace problem into a functional learning experience. Instead of simply generating a transcript, Paradigm Shift extracts the information that actually matters to the user and turns it into something they can learn from. We are also proud of integrating Flutter, FastAPI, Azure AI, and Azure SQL into one application.
What we learned
We learned how important backend architecture, APIs, cloud services, and data flow are when building an AI application. We also learned that building an AI product isn't just about the AI itself. The user experience, data processing, integration between services, and reliability are equally important.
What's next for Paradigm Shift
Next, we want to make Paradigm Shift more personalized and powerful. We plan to improve jargon detection, personalized quizzes, mastery tracking, and enterprise glossaries. We also want to explore company dashboards that allow organizations to see what concepts employees are struggling with while keeping the learning experience focused on helping employees understand, adapt, and succeed.
