Inspiration
Anyone who has ever moved to a new country knows the dread of checking the physical mailbox. In Germany, this even has a name: Briefkastenangst (mailbox anxiety). You open an envelope, stare at dense, legalistic German full of strict deadlines and penalty warnings, and immediately wonder: What does this mean, and what do I have to do right now?
While this idea was born from the labyrinth of German bureaucracy, the problem is universal. Whether you are dealing with a French tax notice, a Spanish rental contract, a Japanese utility bill, or official letters in Marathi or Chinese, navigating paperwork in a foreign language is stressful, error-prone, and time-consuming.
We built PapierTiger to be the companion we wished we had when moving abroad: an intelligent, privacy-first assistant that doesn't just translate text, but actively understands official paperwork, extracts what matters, and takes care of the bureaucratic chores for you.
What it does
PapierTiger turns confusing paperwork into clear, actionable steps:
- Zero-Barrier Guest Analysis: Users can drag and drop a letter or contract on the web immediately—no sign-up required.
- Instant Action Breakdown: Instead of dumping a wall of translated text, PapierTiger highlights the critical facts upfront:
- What is the document?
- How much do I owe? (with exact reference numbers)
- When is the strict deadline?
- What exact action do I need to take?
- Unified Bilingual Reader: Users can inspect documents Paragraph-by-Paragraph, Line-by-Line, or read the Full Document side-by-side with clear language badges (e.g., DE/EN, FR/EN, ES/EN).
- Organized Life Vaults: Documents are automatically sorted into structured categories: Letters (authorities, tax offices), Contracts (with cancellation period tracking), Treasury (invoices, receipts), and History & IDs (social security cards, registrations).
- Autopilot Forms: Bureaucracy doesn't stop at reading letters—it demands filling out forms. PapierTiger uses context from your saved documents to automatically pre-fill official administrative forms (like city registration Anmeldung, housing confirmations, and child benefits).
- Zero-Knowledge Privacy & Cross-Device Sync: All documents are encrypted on the user's device before syncing. When you sign in across the Web dashboard and the Android mobile app, your vault syncs in real time without compromising your privacy.
How we built it
We built PapierTiger as a production-minded, multi-platform system:
- Multimodal AI: Powered by Google Gemini 3.5 Flash for high-accuracy visual parsing, non-Latin script recognition, and structured JSON schema extraction.
- Backend Architecture: Built with Serverpod (Dart) and deployed on Google Cloud Run (
europe-west10) for minimal latency, secure session handling, and scalable execution. - Frontend Clients: A unified Flutter codebase powering both the high-resolution Web application and the native Android mobile app.
- Zero-Knowledge Security: Cryptographic client-side encryption ensuring raw document bytes and personal information remain private to the user.
- Cloud Infrastructure: Hosted via Google Cloud Run, Google Cloud Storage, and managed PostgreSQL.
Challenges we ran into
- Real-World Document Imperfections: Real mail arrives folded, skewed, poorly lit, or captured from mobile cameras at awkward angles. Tuning Gemini 3.5 Flash's vision prompt pipeline to reliably extract micro-text like bank IBANs, file reference numbers (Aktenzeichen), and obscure tax codes required extensive edge-case testing.
- Balancing Privacy with Automation: Building an autopilot form-filling engine while maintaining zero-knowledge client encryption meant designing clean boundaries: documents are decrypted locally in memory, processed securely, and never stored as plaintext on the server.
- Language & Tone Fidelity: Legal and bureaucratic phrasing varies wildly across cultures. We tuned the analysis prompts so the explanations are direct, empathetic, and human without losing technical precision.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Sub-Second Extraction: Achieving near-instant document breakdowns using Gemini 3.5 Flash with zero sluggishness on the live Cloud Run backend.
- A Truly Unified Experience: Seamless live synchronization where a document snapped via the Android mobile camera appears in the Web dashboard in real time.
- Solving a Real Problem: Building a functional, working utility that actually solves an everyday immigrant and citizen headache rather than just another chatbot interface.
What we learned
- Gemini 3.5 Flash Multilingual Breadth: Gemini 3.5 Flash is remarkably capable at understanding dense legal terminology and non-Latin scripts (such as Marathi, Hindi, and Chinese), mapping them directly into standard English structured schemas without intermediate translation loss.
- Action Beats Chat: Users dealing with stressful bureaucracy don't want a long conversational dialogue—they want three clear facts: How much? By when? What button do I press? Designing around structured cards and autopilot forms proved far more useful than an open-ended chatbox.
What's next for PapierTiger
- Global Country Selector for Autopilot Forms: Expanding the form catalog beyond Germany to support official administrative filings for France, Spain, the UK, the US, and India.
- Proactive Deadline Alerts: Calendar and push notifications that alert users 30 days before contract cancellation notice periods (Kündigungsfristen) or official appeal deadlines expire.
- Offline On-Device AI: Integrating lightweight on-device models for instant offline scanning when travelling with limited data connectivity.
