Most households keep their important paperwork as scans and PDFs, receipts, warranties, insurance policies, bills, contracts. The dates that matter are buried inside those files, so return windows pass, warranties lapse, and subscriptions renew without anyone noticing. Nobody reopens a folder just to check an expiry date.
These are also the documents people least want to upload to a cloud chatbot, which makes a NAS the natural place to read them. Paperwork Radar is a Skill that reads them where they already live and turns them into a short list of things that need action.
What it does
Paperwork Radar scans the folders you authorize and finds every deadline: warranty end, return window, policy renewal, payment due, contract notice date. It ranks them into Act now (within 14 days), Soon (up to 60 days), Later, and Expired. Every date cites its source file and page.
- Honest about uncertainty. A blurry scan or an ambiguous date like 03/04/2026 goes to a Needs confirmation list. It never guesses a date or assumes a year.
- Shows its working. For "12-month warranty" plus a purchase date, the report shows the term, the start date, and the result, and marks it as derived.
- Remembers earlier runs. Each saved report doubles as a ledger, so the next run reads only new or changed files.
- Reminders. An optional calendar file (
.ics) can be imported into a phone calendar, which then sends the alerts. - Questions. Ask "when does my laptop warranty end?" and get an answer with the file and page.
- Safe by design. Source documents are read-only. The Skill only creates new files after you approve, and never moves, renames, tags, overwrites, or deletes anything.
How I built it
The Skill is Markdown only, following the UGOS Skill Creation Tool. The parent Skill never touches files itself and only delegates to NAS experts, in order:
file-agentfinds files, spots duplicates, and reads the previous report.document-agentextracts dates, terms, and printed amounts.photo-agentreads text from image scans.- The Skill ranks results using written rules for printed versus derived dates and for High, Medium, and Low confidence.
knowledge-agentsaves the report, andfile-agentwrites the optional calendar file, each after approval.
It handles all five delegation states, plus empty and partial results. For example, "no deadlines found in the files processed" is never reported as "no deadlines exist."
What I learned
- A Skill is closer to a carefully written contract than to code. Its quality comes from precise instructions, clear failure handling, and honest limits.
- Trust matters more than coverage. A report that admits "I can't read this date" is more useful than one that guesses.
- The capability catalog decides what is possible. It has no scheduler, so I could not promise automatic reminders and used a calendar import instead.
Challenges
- No scheduling or notification capability, so reminders had to come from a calendar file that the user's own app turns into alerts.
- Dates are messy. Day and month order, two-digit years, month-only dates, and several dates on one document each needed an explicit rule.
- Kit mismatches. The kit's template headings differ slightly from what its static checker requires, so I ran the checker repeatedly until the package passed with no errors or warnings.
- No NAS yet. Round 1 doesn't require one, so everything is statically checked but untested on real hardware. The riskiest points are OCR on scans outside the photo library and creating the calendar file. Validating them on a UGREEN AI NAS is the first job if I become a Finalist.
Status and disclosure
A community-made Skill, not an official UGREEN Skill. It passes the kit's static checker. It has not yet been run on a NAS. I used Claude (Anthropic) to help draft and check the Skill text, and I reviewed the result.
What's next
Test on a real NAS, tighten the extraction instructions against real scans, and consider optional urgency tagging once the read-only core is proven.
