Paper Pack: say what the paperwork is for, and your UGREEN AI NAS builds a checked, ready-to-submit pack of evidence.
-
Inspired by my parents: my mother can't find her tax receipts, and my father keeps every file but finds none.
-
One sentence in, four NAS experts (file, photo, document, knowledge), one checked pack out. Asks before every write.
-
Example output: claim room left per item, every amount traced to its source file, unreadable receipts flagged, never guessed.
-
Originals are never touched, nothing leaves the NAS, nothing is guessed, and you confirm before anything is written.
Paper Pack helps families turn scattered receipts and documents into a checked, ready-to-submit pack, privately, on their own NAS, by just saying what the paperwork is for.
Inspiration
Paper Pack started at home.
Every tax season, I watch my mother struggle to file her taxes. The receipts she needs exist somewhere: scanned papers, email downloads, photos on her phone. But finding them all, working out what she can still claim, and knowing whether anything is missing turns into days of stress. Some years she gives up on claims she was entitled to, simply because she can't find the proof in time.
My father has the opposite problem. He never wants to lose anything, so he keeps every file, every copy, every version, until his storage runs out. Yet when someone needs one specific document, nobody can find it.
Their documents are all there, but they aren't useful. And neither of them would ever upload payslips, bank statements and ID scans to a cloud AI just to get organized.
A home NAS already keeps all of this safe and private. I wanted it to do the hard part too: understand what the paperwork is for, find the evidence, show what's missing, and never lose or delete a single file along the way.
What it does
My mother can now just say "Prepare my 2026 tax receipts." Paper Pack then:
- Suggests a checklist (medical, education, insurance, childcare, donations and more). She keeps what applies, enters her limits from the official tax guide, and confirms before anything is searched.
- Finds the evidence in her folders and receipt photos in her photo library.
- Reads every document: date, amount, shop, and whose name is on it.
- Shows a clear table: what's complete, what's missing, and how much claim room is left.
- Flags problems instead of guessing: a blurry total, a receipt from last year, a bill in someone else's name, or the same receipt saved twice.
- After she confirms, copies the evidence into one pack folder with a Pack Summary where every amount names its source file.
Here is the kind of summary it builds:
Medical and dental Partial 4 docs 1,240.00 of 3,000.00 1,760.00 left
clinic-feb.pdf 320.00; dental-mar.jpg 450.00; pharmacy-jun.pdf 470.00
Education Complete 2 docs 2,000.00 of 2,000.00 0.00 left
Childcare Not found
Needs review: receipt-0412.jpg (total unreadable), gym-2025.pdf (outside period)
It works all year. In March she says "add this month's receipts". Paper Pack reads only the new files and updates the summary, so tax season becomes a five-minute final check.
The same Skill builds packs for visa applications ("3 payslips and 6 months of bank statements"), insurance claims, or any custom checklist.
How I built it
Paper Pack is a Uliya Skill: a Markdown workflow that coordinates four built-in UGREEN AI NAS experts over eleven steps:
- file-agent (
ug-filesystem): finds documents and earlier summaries, detects exact duplicate files, creates the pack folder and copies evidence. - photo-agent (
ug-photo): finds receipt photos in the library and reads their text. - document-agent (
ug-document): extracts dates, amounts and vendors, reconciles them against the checklist, and writes the summary. - knowledge-agent (
ug-knowledge): saves the Pack Summary.
Each step passes on only the real result of the step before it. All five delegation states (completed, failed, cancelled, waiting for the user, waiting for approval) and empty or partial results are handled explicitly, so the Skill always knows what to do when something goes wrong.
How Paper Pack meets the judging criteria
- User value: it solves a real, recurring problem that every household faces every year, and answers the question people actually ask: "how much can I still claim?"
- Innovation: built-in tools search or sort one thing at a time. Paper Pack starts from the user's goal, checks completeness against rules, and traces every number back to its file.
- Technical quality: read-only originals, copy-only packs, no overwriting, confirmation before any write, a clear "Needs review" path instead of guessed values, and a test plan with planted edge cases.
- AI NAS fit: it chains file search, photo OCR, document understanding and file handling into one result none of them can produce alone, on the most private data a family owns, which never leaves home.
Challenges I ran into
- Choosing the right idea. My first idea was a family-memories album builder, but similar projects already exist on Devpost. I switched to the problem I watch my parents struggle with every year.
- Never guessing. Receipts are often faded or blurry. I designed a "Needs review" status with a specific reason, so the AI never invents an amount.
- Counting every receipt once. The same receipt often exists as a PDF and a phone photo, so Paper Pack combines exact-file duplicate detection with a same-shop, same-date, same-amount check.
- Working in any country. Tax rules differ everywhere, so the checklist is general and the user sets each limit from their own official source.
- Respecting people like my dad. Paper Pack never moves, edits or deletes an original. A tool that might lose a file is a tool he would never trust.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
- Every amount in the summary is traceable to the exact file it came from.
- Claim room left turns a stressful deadline into a simple to-do list.
- Year-round use: monthly updates instead of one painful weekend.
- Privacy by design: no document or extracted data ever leaves the NAS.
What I learned
The real power of an AI NAS isn't any single feature. It comes from chaining search, photo reading, document understanding and file handling into one useful result. I also learned that the automation people trust most is the kind that asks before it acts and admits when it can't read something.
What's next for Paper Pack
- A no-extra-space mode for people like my dad: the pack holds only the summary and links to the original files, so nothing is duplicated.
- A duplicate report that shows which copies are safe to remove, without the Skill ever deleting anything itself.
- Ready-made templates for more tax systems and visa types.
- Real-receipt testing on the UGREEN AI NAS in Round 2, starting with my mother's actual shoebox of receipts.
