Inspiration
The inspiration of the game came from my childhood memories when I played Finger Football or Paper Football with my friends. A simple, engaging, exciting and addictive game.
What it does
The game presents the player with a football placed on the field and a football player character blocking the path of the football trajectory. Your task is to simply flick the ball past the goal posts and score! No controllers are required. Simply use your hands and enjoy the game for hours on end. After each flick, the positions of the ball and opponent football player change to make the play time more engaging.
How we built it
We used the amazing building blocks provided by Meta to build the game. Interaction, Audio SDKs and Passthrough are the cornerstones of this game. We used C# and Unity IDE 2022.3.22f1.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge was the flick gesture. There is no flick gesture in the Interaction SDK, so we had to create and customize the gesture and introduce adequate physics force as the only and primary player action. Flicking action needed the right amount of force to ensure the game is neither too easy and nor too difficult to play. The players stay engaged and are challenged and rewarded for their skills.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The flick gesture is probably the accomplishment we are most proud of. It is the main user interaction with the game. It is intuitive, simple and fun. We believe that simple games are the most memorable ones.
What we learned
We learnt the intricacies of hand gestures & passthrough. After experimenting with all hand gestures available, we decided to create the flick gesture to simplify playing. The little details of the game add tremendous value to it. As an example, by placing the ball automatically back on the kicking (or flicking!) stand, the game becomes more fluid and allows the player to focus on the flicking action rather than grabbing the football after each flick. Real stadium background crowd noise adds an authentic experience to the game! You can also hear the distinct football kick sound every time you flick the football.
What's next for Finger Football
We have big plans for Finger Football. We would like to submit the app to Meta Store(s) (Main and AppLab). The next version of the game will include:
- Multiplayer - Two players with Meta Quest headsets can play together across the globe. The game will continue to support single player mode.
- Opponent Hand Pose - In multiplayer mode, there will be no goal posts. The goal posts are the hands of the opponent who will form the posts with hands, just like the real Finger Football game. The opponent's Meta Quest will detect the hands (resembling the goal posts) and transmit it to the other Meta Quest which will show them to the player. The shooter or player must ensure that the ball passes through the opponents' hands! This is going to be the most challenging feature that will take the game to the next level. See the attached image of two players playing Finger Football.
- Meta's Left-Hand Menu - Intuitive left-hand palm menu UI to restart the game, change the mode to single or multiplayer and more.
- Meta's Voice SDK - Players can simply use voice commands to restart a game, change game mode and more!
- Particle effects - Exciting particle effects to show the trajectory of the ball and an extra sizzle to the kick.
