Inspiration

Paper Bridge was inspired by the emotional gap we observed in caregiving relationships. Caregivers often give continuously without receiving enough feedback, leading to burnout, while care receivers—especially elderly users—may struggle to express themselves and feel a loss of autonomy. We wanted to create a gentle, accessible way for care receivers to share their thoughts and feelings, and for caregivers to better understand them, without adding pressure or complexity to either side.

What it does

Paper Bridge allows caregivers to select questions from different categories and languages to ask care receivers. The care receiver can respond using voice input, which is automatically converted into text and displayed on a personalised card. Each card includes the date and the care receiver’s name, can be customised with different colours, and can be printed as a physical copy. This creates a tangible, meaningful exchange of communication that helps caregivers receive feedback and gives care receivers more freedom to express themselves in their own time and way.

How we built it

We designed Paper Bridge as a simple digital-to-physical system. The caregiver interface focuses on easy question selection and customisation, while the care receiver interface prioritises accessibility through voice input. Voice responses are transcribed automatically and formatted into a card layout that supports printing. The design emphasises clarity, personalisation, and familiarity, ensuring the experience feels supportive rather than technical.

Challenges we ran into

One key challenge was balancing simplicity with flexibility—making the system customisable without overwhelming users. Ensuring accurate voice transcription, especially across different languages and accents, was also technically challenging. Additionally, designing questions that feel supportive rather than intrusive required careful consideration to respect the dignity and autonomy of care receivers.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have created a solution that transforms feedback into something tangible and human rather than purely digital. The ability to customise language, colour, and format makes each interaction feel personal. Most importantly, Paper Bridge addresses emotional well-being on both sides of caregiving, not just practical needs.

What we learned

We learned that communication in caregiving is as important as physical support. Giving care receivers a low-pressure way to express themselves can significantly improve mutual understanding. We also learned that physical artifacts, like printed cards, can carry emotional value that screens often lack—especially for elderly users.

What's next for Paper Bridge

Next, we plan to expand language and voice support, improve transcription accuracy, and explore deeper personalisation of questions and card designs. We also aim to test Paper Bridge in real caregiving environments to better understand its impact on caregiver burnout and care receiver autonomy, and to refine the product based on real-world feedback.
