Inspiration
The inspiration for PantryPal came from two very personal challenges. On a daily basis, I found myself frustrated when looking at recipes online because I was always missing one or two key ingredients. I wanted a way to cook smarter with what I already had. On a deeper level, my dad lives with diabetes and other health conditions, and I saw how difficult it was for him to manage food choices while balancing nutrition and medical needs. PantryPal grew out of a desire to solve both problems—making cooking easier and making health-conscious diet planning more accessible.
What it does
PantryPal is an AI-powered health-first recipe and meal planning platform. It: Turns pantry ingredients into complete recipes. Generates personalized meal plans for 50+ health conditions. Checks for food–medication interactions and allergen risks. Provides nutritional optimization for goals like weight management, energy balance, or heart health. Integrates with shopping and restaurant services to create a seamless cooking and dining experience. It’s not just a recipe app—it’s like having a personal nutritionist, meal planner, and cooking assistant all in one.
How we built it
We built PantryPal using a modern full-stack architecture: Frontend: Next.js 14 with App Router, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, and Framer Motion for smooth, responsive UI. Backend: Next.js API routes with a Supabase PostgreSQL database using Row Level Security for privacy. AI Integration: Prompt-engineering powered recipe generation, nutritional analysis, and health-condition mapping. Security: HIPAA-inspired protection with end-to-end encryption and user-controlled data sharing. The system was designed with scalability, security, and accessibility in mind.
Challenges we ran into
Database issues: Connecting and syncing the Supabase database correctly with the app caused several delays. AI reliability: Sometimes recipe generation didn’t return consistent results, or mock recipes displayed incorrectly. Integration complexity: Making health condition checks and dietary modifications work smoothly required significant tuning. Balancing scope: With so many potential features, it was a challenge to prioritize what to implement first.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a platform that generates recipes from any ingredients you have on hand. Created a unique health-first recipe app that provides personalized diet plans for medical conditions—a very rare feature in the current market. Successfully integrated AI to provide multiple recipe options and health-tailored suggestions. Learned and applied a full modern tech stack from scratch to deliver a working prototype.
What we learned
How to build and deploy a modern web app with Next.js, Supabase, and AI integrations. The importance of designing for real-world use cases (like missing ingredients and chronic health management). How challenging but rewarding it is to connect AI with structured health/nutrition data. That solving problems you’ve personally faced makes the project much more impactful and motivating.
What’s next for PantryPal
API integrations: Connect with DoorDash, Walmart, and Instacart for full e-commerce integration. Wearable health sync: Link with Apple Health, Fitbit, and other devices to personalize meal plans based on real health data. Telehealth expansion: Provide dashboards for doctors/dietitians and allow patients to share safe meal plans. Social features: Enable users to share recipes, meal plans, and cooking sessions with friends and family. Global rollout: Expand with multi-language support, international cuisines, and cultural dietary practices.
