Inspiration
Our inspiration stems from the pressing need to address issues of food accessibility, affordability, and health equity. We aim to create a solution that empowers communities to combat food waste while ensuring that underserved individuals have access to healthy and affordable food options.
What it does
PantryPal is a web application that serves as a comprehensive platform to tackle food-related challenges. Users can log their food items, track expiration dates, and make informed decisions about whether to use, trash, or donate items nearing expiration. The integration of AI-driven recipe recommendations and donation coordination via government-owned serve robots enhances the overall user experience.
How we built it
We built PantryPal with a React frontend and a Python Flask backend, utilizing Firebase for efficient storage of food entries. Advanced features, such as object detection and optical character recognition (OCR) for extracting expiration dates, are powered by Google Vision API. The recipe recommendation feature leverages OpenAI's GPT-3 model. The seamless integration of PantryPal with government-owned serve robots for food delivery ensures efficient donation processes.
Challenges we ran into
Throughout the development process, we faced challenges in implementing advanced AI features, coordinating with serve robots, and ensuring the security and reliability of the system. Overcoming these challenges required a collaborative effort and innovative problem-solving.
