Inspiration
Figuring out what to cook can take up lots of time. Especially as a university student with a limited amount of funds to spend on groceries, sometimes you have to scrape by with what you already have in your fridge. If you don't know what you're doing, improvising a cooking recipe oftentimes leads to disaster... We wanted to make cooking more convenient for those with limited ingredients and time, which served as our inspiration for PantryPal
What it does
PantryPal is a virtual fridge that allows you to keep track of what food you have in your kitchen. It can be updated quickly by uploading a photo of your grocery receipts. PantryPal will also analyze what you have in your kitchen, giving you personalized recipe recommendations.
How we built it
On the frontend, we used React and CSS. Backend-wise, we used Python, Flask, Langchain, and MongoDB
Challenges we ran into
We ran into lots of errors from the backend to connecting the API, and ensuring the agent works. Frontend-wise, rerouting pages, handling HTTP requests, and centring divs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We all were able to sharpen our React skills, a language we were all fairly unfamiliar with. We were all able to come out with more knowledge in a certain language.
What we learned
For a couple of us, this was our first hackathon. We were able to learn the importance of working together and communication. Getting a foot in the door in the world of hacking will serve us well as we pursue future endeavours.
What's next for PantryPal
Developing a mobile app would make this concept much more accessible and practical. Enhancing the UI would also be a future room for improvement for PantryPal.
