Inspiration

Food waste is a pressing issue in Singapore, with households discarding an estimated 26,000 tonnes of food annually before it is even cooked, amounting to S$342 million in waste. Meanwhile, surveys conducted by NEA and other agencies highlighted that one of the most significant factors contributing to this problem is households forgetting what's hidden in their refrigerators. As food waste increases our carbon footprint due to the resources required for production, transport, and storage, we are committed to tackle this issue in the name of sustainability. Our app empowers users to take control by tracking fridge contents, receiving timely expiry notifications, and accessing AI-generated recipes to make the most of their ingredients, turning waste into a sustainable future. More importantly, we don't have to eat moddy breads anymore ;D.

What it does

Keep track of expiry and best-consumed dates of foods in the pantry. Users can upload the inventory everytime they bought grocery. With a centralize app, users can use this platform to keep track of expiry dates and best-consumed dates. Users will get notify when items expiring, and low-stock alerts. And based on the inventory in pantry, users can get AI-recommended for themselves, friends and family. From the selected recipe, if ingredients are running low, a shopping list will automatically generated.

How we built it

Web app that generated list after users uploaded thier grocery into the system. Users can have a final look before save the data into the system, Users can customize expiry date, food category, and whether the food is refrigerated. Once the data is stored, users can get AI-recommended recipes.

Challenges we ran into

The code didn’t work initially. Connecting the API to the database was complex and full of unexpected challenges, pushing us to tackle advanced coding difficulties with persistence and creativity. The website UI transition does not animate the way we want it to. Navigating a new designing software was tedious Lack of time, our coder stayed up until 4am just to fix the bugs in the code.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The ui animation transition working the way we intend it to. Seeing our design vision come to life with smooth and engaging animations felt incredibly rewarding and made the user experience far more polished. Making a functional prototype of our Ai that can track ingredients, generate AI-powered recipes, and even provide helpful shelf life suggestions for users.

What we learned

We discovered the importance of intuitive user interfaces, seamless data customization, and leveraging AI to enhance user experiences by providing tailored recipe recommendations based on stored groceries.

What's next for Pantry Maniac

Shared Pantry

Enable households, roommates, or families to collaborate on managing a shared pantry. Users can update, add, or remove iteams collectively in real time. Shopping lists will be automated generated when shared items are running low.

Pantry Following

We developed a web application that allows users to upload their grocery lists into the system. Before saving, users can review and modify the data, including customizing the expiry date, food category, and refrigeration status. Once the data is saved, the system provides users with AI-recommended recipes based on their stored groceries.enhance a pantry.
