Inspiration
Although many people would like to save money on food, cooking isn't always a plausible option for some. There are a lot of pitfalls to cooking. Cooking requires time, a lot of insight to be able to cook cost-efficiently, and a mental cookbook just to think of recipes. Even for some members of our team that cook frequently, it's not easy thinking of a meal every day using what we have in our kitchens. So what if we could have a cookbook specially tailored just for your kitchen? That's what Pantry Chef is for!
What it does
Pantry Chef looks through thousands of recipes and filters them down by the ingredients that you own, excluding some ubiquitous ingredients like water and salt. Not only that, but it also works as a general search engine for recipes.
How we built it
We first downloaded React, NVM and NPM to be able to alter the Create-My-React website. We then installed AWS Amplify so that it would host the website as well as work as a backend and database so that the recipe API would be called once and stored into the database for ease of calling. During then, the search function was created to look through a list. It was changed to look through names and ingredients of the listed recipes.
Challenges we ran into
For many of us, it was our first time working with React or Javascript. Many of us were mostly used to Java and Python, so we had a lot to learn. Just setting up the files for React, NVM, and NPM were arduous for us.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're very proud of the search bar. We were able to change it from how it was originally where it would just search through the names of a list to where it could look through the names and the ingredients.
What we learned
We learned a lot on how to use React as well as code in Javascript. There were so many times
What's next for Pantry Chef
We hope to be able to call the API in the backend and store them into the database. We also wish to be able to embed a link to the recipes with the name on the website so that users could easily access the recipes from our site.
