Inspiration
Each of us have busy families who spend a lot of time planning groceries for the week. We wanted to create a user friendly app that considers what items are currently in stock and what has been bought recently to determine the most necessary items to buy. We believe this app would benefit low income families the most because low income families tend to make impulse decisions about food instead of thinking long term. This app will help them plan out their groceries to not only eat healthier, but save money and time.
What it does
We created an ios app using xcode to solve this problem. The app keeps an up to date inventory of the food in your household. Based on inventory, it gives suggestions on what to add to your weekly grocery list. Since this app is tailored towards families, it allows you to share the same inventory and lists with the entire family.
How we built it
We used xcode at first because we wanted to learn swift. Mariah had some prior experience with xcode and sketch. We spent a few hours at the beginning of the hackathon on planning the app's main functions, its purpose, and design.
Challenges we ran into
Since Mariah was the only one of us who had prior experience with coding in swift, she taught us some basics of the xcode platform. We also had issues with the development environments. Only two of us had Macs and some of the software was only available for apple products.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of being able to connect our app to Firebase. One of the Pendo mentors introduced us to Firebase and we wanted it use it since it was a free and flexible database.
What we learned
We learned the xcode platforn, sketch, and coding in swift.
What's next for Pantri
Some changes we could implement in the future includes a feature that tracks the expiration dates of each item from a database that contains the common lifespan of different food products. Additionally we could include recipe suggestions for items that are about to expire. This would save time as well as prevent food waste.
