Inspiration
As a college student, my stomach is always empty after every class, but my bank account is equally empty, and many other students have expressed similar experiences to me. From the club side, most clubs have excess foods at the end of their meetings, and it is usually due to not many people knowing that the club is hosting a meeting with food that day. Thus, bridging this communication gap could lead people to going to these club meetings for the food and enjoying the club, providing food for the hungry students and new members for the clubs.
What it does
Panther Plate Savers helps eliminate wasted food that results from club meetings at Pitt. It provides a platform for students to encounter new experiences by attending open club events that provide free food.
How we built it
We first created prototypes in Figma to plan out and conceptualize our idea of reducing food waste. Then we used HTML and CSS as our code base.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into technical challenges and had trouble figuring out how to incorporate Google Calendar and Google Forms into our functionality.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
An accomplishment that we are proud of is getting the google form to sync with the google calendar automatically so that clubs can submit their events with all the necessary details easily, and students can view this data in an easy to read manner.
What we learned
We learned how to use Google Forms and Google Calendar through Zapier to connect the data on the back end.
What's next for Panther Plate Savers
We plan to improve our code by adding new ways for clubs to submit their own events to add to the calendar and list.
