Inspiration
Since April 2020, the app has been available free of charge for iOS and Android smartphones, but the idea was already born in 2016. The starting point for the seven young founders was the fact that factors such as lack of exercise, stress and an unhealthy diet are responsible for a large number of preventable diseases. According to a WHO study, more than two thirds of young people in Europe do too little exercise. Every year, one million deaths and the loss of 8.3 million years of life can be attributed to a lack of exercise.
Michael Neulinger, a medical student and one of the founders of Pandocs, wants to change this and therefore gathered a group of students from various disciplines. The goal: to turn health into a game.
What it does
With Pandocs, healthy activities are integrated into everyday life. Walking 5,000 steps, exercising for ten minutes, cooking a recipe of the day: over 20 different challenges from the areas of fitness, nutrition and mental well-being motivate users to lead a balanced lifestyle every day. If the challenges are successfully completed, not only virtual points and a higher position in the ranking list are rewarded, but also real rewards from our partner companies.
How we built it
Pandocs consists of four main parts:
- A native iOS app, built with Swift
- A native Android app, built with Java and Cotlin
- A web-app for administration, built with Angular
- A server backend, built with C#
Challenges we ran into
Our first prototype for iOS and Android was built using Xamarin, but we quickly ran into troubles integrating native APIs for location services and step tracking. Additionally, this cross-platform solution did not meet our standards concerning speed and ease of use. So we started from scratch and built the two apps natively.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
In 2020, we won the NEXUS digital health innovation challenge by the Austrian ministry of innovation (BMK).
What's next for Pandocs - Enjoy the Game of Life
Currently, 75 % of our users are from Austria. We plan on expanding further by translating our app to more languages and by building more partnerships in other countries. Besides our B2B market, we want to introduce Pandocs as a powerful tool for workplace health promotion. We started our sales campaign earlier this year.
