Inspiration
We were inspired by classic Tamagotchi-style games and by how people naturally interact on Reddit. Instead of daily chores or timers, we wanted a game that fits Reddit’s rhythm: short moments, shared context, and visible choices through posts and comments.
What it does
Storypal is a lightweight social creature game for Reddit. Every few hours, a story event appears as a post. Players make one choice for their pal, and those choices slowly shape its personality and appearance. Pals can share their decisions as comments, allowing the community to see and compare how different paths emerge over time.
How we built it
We built the game using Devvit with a React-based client and Redis for persistence. Game state is modeled as a small set of personality axes, which drive both visuals and profile stats. The UI uses simple tab navigation, smooth transitions, and a radar chart to make progression easy to understand.
Challenges we ran into
Designing progression without grind was difficult. We also had to balance clarity and mystery in player choices, keep animations smooth within Reddit’s environment, and ensure the game worked well even with low or irregular participation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of creating a game that feels native to Reddit, where gameplay naturally blends into posts and comments. The event system, visual personality mapping, and asynchronous pacing all came together cleanly.
What we learned
We learned how powerful small, well-timed interactions can be, and how important visual feedback is for making abstract systems feel personal. We also gained a deeper understanding of building interactive experiences within platform constraints.
What's next for Storypal
Next, we want to expand the event system, add more visual variety, allow players to rename and share their pals more easily, and explore light community-driven features without turning the game into a grind.
