Inspiration
Agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, yet many farmers still rely on traditional knowledge, guesswork, or limited access to expert consultation when making critical decisions about soil, crops, fertilizers, and irrigation.
Poor soil analysis and improper crop selection often lead to:
- Reduced crop yields
- Excessive fertilizer usage
- Water wastage
- Soil degradation
We were inspired by a simple but powerful question:
Can AI help farmers make smarter, data-driven soil decisions in an accessible and affordable way?
With the rise of advanced AI models like Gemini, we saw an opportunity to build an intelligent agriculture assistant that combines soil analysis, crop intelligence, reminders, and market insights into one unified platform.
PakAgri Soil Smart was created to transform complex agricultural science into simple, actionable recommendations that improve productivity and sustainability.
What it does
PakAgri Soil Smart is an AI-powered agricultural decision-support system designed to help farmers make informed farming choices.
The system provides:
1. Smart Soil & Crop Analysis
- Users can manually enter soil type, crop name, and location.
- Alternatively, users can upload a soil image and select a crop.
- The AI analyzes suitability and provides:
- Fertilizer recommendations
- Irrigation guidance
- Nutrient deficiency insights
- Soil improvement suggestions
- Crop suitability evaluation
- Fertilizer recommendations
2. Crop Library
A structured digital encyclopedia of Pakistan’s major crops, including:
- Ideal soil type
- Required pH range
- Water requirements
- Suitable growing season (Rabi/Kharif)
3. Soil Testing Reminders
Users can schedule reminders for soil testing before sowing to ensure timely nutrient checks and better crop cycle management.
4. Market & Weather Insights
The platform displays:
- Estimated mandi rates
- Fertilizer prices
- Location-based weather forecasts
- Market updates and policy insights
This makes the app a complete soil-to-market smart farming assistant.
How we built it
PakAgri Soil Smart was developed using Google AI Studio with Gemini as the core intelligence engine.
- Gemini API powers soil reasoning, crop suitability analysis, and contextual recommendation generation.
- Structured prompt design ensures farmer-friendly, actionable outputs.
- Image-based soil evaluation leverages Gemini’s multimodal capabilities.
- The UI was designed to be clean, simple, and accessible for non-technical users.
The system focuses on clarity, usability, and practical decision support rather than replacing agricultural experts.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was translating complex agricultural knowledge into simple, understandable AI responses for farmers.
Other challenges included:
- Designing accurate yet generalizable soil recommendations
- Avoiding overly technical outputs
- Structuring prompts to ensure consistent, reliable suggestions
- Balancing AI reasoning with practical real-world usability
Ensuring that the system provides helpful guidance without overclaiming scientific precision was a key design consideration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built a unified AI-driven agriculture assistant that integrates:
- Soil suitability analysis
- Image-based interpretation
- Crop intelligence library
- Reminder system
- Market insights
Creating both manual and image-based soil evaluation within a simple interface was a major milestone. We are proud of building a solution that directly addresses real-world farming challenges in Pakistan.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned:
- How to use Gemini as a responsible decision-support system
- The importance of structured prompt engineering
- How multimodal AI can enhance agricultural guidance
- The need to balance technical capability with accessibility
We also gained deeper insight into soil science, sustainable farming practices, and how AI can support food security.
What's next for PakAgri Soil Smart
Future improvements include:
- Integration of real-time soil sensor data
- Expanded regional crop datasets
- Multilingual support (Urdu and regional languages)
- Real-time mandi price APIs
- Collaboration with agricultural experts and institutions
Our long-term goal is to scale PakAgri Soil Smart into a nationwide AI-powered agriculture support platform that improves farmer productivity and promotes sustainable farming practices.
