Inspiration

Finding the right teammates for hackathons and side projects is often chaotic and time-consuming. Most people rely on random Discord messages, WhatsApp groups, or personal networks, which leads to mismatched teams and missed opportunities. We wanted to create a faster, smarter, and more engaging way for builders to connect with compatible collaborators.

What it does

PairUp is a smart matchmaking platform for developers, designers, and innovators to find teammates for hackathons, startups, and side projects. Users can create profiles, swipe through potential collaborators, match based on skills and interests, chat in real time, and share resumes or social links for better collaboration.

How we built it

We built PairUp using a modern full-stack architecture with a responsive frontend, real-time communication features, and AI-powered compatibility matching. The platform combines profile discovery, swipe-based interactions, and contextual team formation into a clean and intuitive experience.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing a matching system that felt meaningful instead of random. We also worked on balancing performance with real-time interactions, structuring user data effectively, and creating a UI that remained smooth and engaging across devices.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of building a platform that feels both practical and enjoyable to use. The swipe-based experience, polished UI, real-time chat, and compatibility-focused matching system came together to create something that genuinely solves a problem hackathon participants face regularly.

What we learned

We learned the importance of user experience in social platforms, how critical fast interactions are for engagement, and how thoughtful matchmaking logic can significantly improve collaboration quality. We also gained valuable experience in real-time systems and scalable application design.

What's next for PairUp

We plan to expand PairUp with AI-based skill gap analysis, smarter team recommendations, hackathon-specific team rooms, portfolio verification, and community features that help builders continue collaborating even beyond hackathons. Currently, working on its landing site.
