Inspiration

This game was inspired by the various indie horror story-driven collectathons that recently popped up, most recently Choo Choo Charles. While brainstorming ideas leading up to the game jam, I also recalled Tom Scott's video of Jingle Bells, Batman Smells variations across the world, leading to the title and titular mechanic.

What it does

After crashing in a forest, Santa has to find his scattered reindeer to get his sleigh airborne again. He can call out to the reindeer to discern their location and hop on his lightly-used skis for a bit more speed, but it's not just his reindeer that are listening...

How we built it

This game was made using the Godot game engine.

Challenges we ran into

Working alone meant having to both sprite and code at the same time. In addition, mechanics of this game got fairly experimental, leading to me learning on the fly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The lightning system, sound system, and object-intensive world generation were all things I had little experience working with prior.

What we learned

I learned a lot about the Godot game engine, as well as various programming practices as a whole.

What's next for Pair of Broken Skis

  • More interactive enemies
  • Fixing a few quirks in the sound direction system
  • Fine-tuning difficulty
