Inspiration
I've always wanted to build a game, but the process felt overwhelming - so many moving parts, so much setup, and so little time to get from idea to playable prototype. Memory games have always fascinated me for their universal appeal and simple, addictive mechanics. When I discovered Bolt.new, I saw a chance to bring my game idea to life, quickly and creatively, without getting bogged down in boilerplate.
What it does
Pair it – The Ultimate Memory Challenge is a vibrant, interactive card matching game that tests your memory and reflexes. Players flip cards to reveal hidden symbols and try to find matching pairs. The game offers multiple grid sizes, fun categories (like emojis, numbers, and colors), and a sleek, animated interface. It’s easy to pick up, challenging to master, and perfect for anyone who loves a good brain workout.
How we built it
I started by crafting a detailed prompt for Bolt.new, describing the gameplay, UI, categories, and overall vibe I wanted. Bolt.new’s AI generated a fully functional React + TypeScript + Tailwind app right from that single prompt. I then made just 2 edits to add Bolt.new badge and update the favicon, and published to Netlify. Deploying to Netlify was straightforward, and I made sure to showcase the Bolt.new badge as a nod to the platform that made this rapid development possible.
Challenges we ran into
- Prompt Precision: When I was playing around with Bolt.new I noticed that my initial prompts weren’t specific enough, resulting in generic outputs. I learned to be more descriptive to get exactly what I envisioned.
- Badge Integration: Surprisingly, getting the Bolt.new badge to show up on the deployed Netlify version took a couple of tries due to asset path and deployment quirks.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Rapid Prototyping: Built the core game from a single AI prompt, something I never thought was possible before.
- Fun, Playable Game: Created a polished, engaging memory game with multiple settings and categories.
- Learning New Tools: Mastered prompt engineering and leveraged AI to accelerate the entire development process.
- Overcoming Deployment Hiccups: Successfully troubleshooted and resolved deployment issues, including the badge integration.
What we learned
- Prompt engineering is a superpower: Clear, detailed prompts lead to better AI-generated results.
- AI can turn ideas into reality: With the right tools, even ambitious projects are within reach for solo builders.
- Deployment always has surprises: No matter how smooth development feels, testing on production always reveals new lessons.
What's next for Pair it – The Ultimate Memory Challenge
- Leaderboards: Add global and friend leaderboards to spark competition.
- New Game Modes: Introduce time trials, streak challenges, and multiplayer options.
- Accessibility Features: Make the game even more inclusive with colorblind modes and keyboard navigation.
- Mobile Optimization: Finetune the experience for mobile play.
- Community Packs: Let players create and share their own card sets.
Pair-it is just getting started, and with the power of AI-driven development, fun never stops!
