Inspiration
My mom is a Special Ed Teacher. She expressed wanting to have more fun games for her students that they could enjoy and learn from. Coloring is a very calming and enjoyable thing to do, so we made a coloring app. For number and color recognition, we added Color by Number as one of the games available to the students. After asking the students what additional games they would like, we decided to make an entirely new game, called Color by Memory so that it could exercise their cognitive functions and short-term memory capabilities. The students also wanted more freedom within the games, so we added a drawing feature and a free coloring game.
What it does
It engages students with disabilities and provides a great educational tool that students can use both at school and at home.
How we built it
The front end was built using HTML and CSS, and the back end was written in Java. Stack-overflow was also consulted religiously.
Challenges we ran in to
Many of our goals were too ambitious at first, and we would have to go back to the basics when a particular aspect we were trying to incorporate failed. Additionally, it was very difficult to meet up with our teammates as we are not situated in the same area currently. Despite all of our struggles, we managed to help each other and overcome most of them.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
We made great progress on our project, despite us not coordinating too much because of a different timezone, the amount of new information we learned in this amount of time was surprising as well; we learned about Java packages, designing a website, graphics, and more!
What we learned
As well as learning multiple new coding aspects, we learned how to code effectively as a team, using communication skills and github to commit our changes only when we were sure that the code would not break.
What's next for Paintify
There are a few bugs that we could not fix in time, so the next steps would be to fix some of the versions of the games so that they work smoothly and without errors! A future task of bringing something new to the project would be to bring reactivity with JavaScript. Along, having a reactive design meant for all types of screens!
