PaidCare didn't begin during OpenAI Build Week.

It began years earlier with paper, pens, handwritten agreements, payment worksheets, mileage logs, schedules, and one recurring realization: professional caregivers deserved better tools.

By 2015, I had already developed a paper-based operating system that I continued refining through real caregiving experience. Every household taught me something new, but the same operational challenges kept appearing:

  • Late or incorrect pay
  • Scope creep
  • Changing expectations
  • Scattered communication
  • Missing documentation
  • No shared operational history between caregivers and families

Rather than accepting those problems, I kept improving the system.

When Codex became available, I immediately recognized that the operating system I had been carrying in notebooks for years could finally become software. I began building PaidCare before I even knew OpenAI Build Week existed. When I later received the Build Week announcement, I realized I was already building exactly the project I wanted to share.

What it does

PaidCare is a professional caregiver workspace that brings households, agreements, schedules, shift logging, payments, documents, reviews, analytics, activity history, and care notes into one connected system.

It helps caregivers and families stay organized, aligned, and supported throughout the entire care relationship while creating a professional record of the work being performed.

How I built it

I used GPT-5.6 as my product strategy and planning partner to refine workflows, user experience, product requirements, copy, and edge cases.

I used Codex as my engineering collaborator to transform those ideas into a working application through rapid implementation, testing, validation, browser QA, and continuous iteration.

Every product, workflow, operational, and design decision came from years of real caregiving experience. OpenAI's tools made it possible to transform that experience into a working product in just two weeks.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge wasn't deciding what to build.

It was deciding what belonged in Version 1.

Years of real-world caregiving had already produced far more ideas than could fit into one Build Week. I had to continually step back, think beyond my own workflow, and ask whether each feature genuinely improved the product for future caregivers and families.

Just as important was resisting the temptation to move too quickly. Every new feature required thoughtful testing, validation, and refinement before moving on to the next. I wanted PaidCare to feel intentional, cohesive, and trustworthy rather than simply feature-rich.

That discipline ultimately shaped the product just as much as the code itself.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Transforming a paper-based caregiver operating system into a working software application.
  • Building a connected caregiver workspace in just two weeks.
  • Preserving years of real-world operational knowledge while creating a clean, modern user experience.
  • Creating a privacy-safe demonstration that still feels like a real household.
  • Maintaining a stable architecture while continuously adding features and expanding automated testing.
  • Building a product that I genuinely believe can improve the day-to-day experience of professional caregivers and the families they support.

What I learned

This project completely changed how I think about software development.

For years I had a mature operational system that existed only on paper because I didn't have the technical ability to build it myself.

OpenAI's models didn't invent PaidCare.

They gave me the ability to finally build something I had imagined, refined, tested, and believed in for years.

I also learned the value of disciplined iteration. Careful planning, frequent validation, focused testing, and thoughtful product decisions produced a much stronger application than simply adding as many features as possible.

What's next for PaidCare

This Build Week submission represents the beginning, not the finish line.

My goal is to continue expanding PaidCare into a complete caregiver operating system with production authentication, family collaboration, hosted deployment, mobile support, configurable workweeks, learning modules, deeper analytics, and additional tools that help professional caregivers manage their work with the same professionalism expected in any other industry.

Most importantly, I want PaidCare to grow beyond my own experience and become a tool that helps caregivers everywhere feel more organized, more confident, and more respected.
