About the Project: Pagiis 🌍📲
🚀 Inspiration
As a passionate South African entrepreneur and traveler, I noticed how difficult it is for tourists and even locals to discover hidden gems—especially in rural or underrepresented areas. Major platforms often overlook small businesses, informal guides, or community-driven experiences. I asked myself:
"What if people could connect instantly and explore any town or city through the eyes of those who are already there?"
That idea became Pagiis — a geolocation-based social networking platform designed to connect people through real-time, location-specific photos, stories, and local insights.
🛠️ How We Built It
- Frontend: Built with Android (Java/Kotlin), using RecyclerViews, Fragments, and Firebase for real-time updates.
- Backend: Google Firebase for user authentication, media storage, and real-time data sync.
- Geolocation: Integrated native Android location services to fetch and filter content based on user location.
- Messaging: Telegram TDLib used for lightweight chat features.
- Design: Clean, minimalist UI inspired by Instagram and TikTok for intuitive engagement.
💡 What We Learned
- The power of geolocation as a storytelling and tourism driver.
- How to build a scalable backend using Firebase with offline sync capabilities.
- Balancing user experience with performance on low-end devices.
- How important it is to integrate safety, content moderation, and data permissions early in development.
🧗 Challenges We Faced
- Designing for poor network conditions in rural areas.
- Handling media uploads and building in pause/resume functionality.
- Building a system that encourages authentic content from strangers, while keeping users safe.
- Ensuring real-time feed filtering without draining battery life.
🌟 What Makes Pagiis Special
Pagiis isn’t just another social app—it’s a local travel guide powered by real people. From discovering hidden food stalls in Soweto to finding local surf spots in Port St. Johns, the platform turns ordinary experiences into shared cultural moments.
Our goal is to reach 1 million users, especially among students, travelers, and small business owners, and drive domestic tourism like never before.
