Inspiration
Pager-Rx was inspired by the struggles of one of my classmates. As Pharmacy students, one of the core principles of delivering pharmaceutical care is the availability of medications. My classmate lamented about how he had gone to multiple pharmacies in search of a drug and hadn’t found any yet wasting not only valuable time but also resources. Time that could’ve been spent preparing for examinations.
If only he could’ve been pre-informed about which community pharmacies had the medication in stock or better still, simply ordered it from wherever it was available and had it delivered without stress.
This is a struggle not only facing the youth but especially the elderly, who, despite being on chronic drug therapy, simply stop taking their medications when faced with unavailability during restock. This exposes them to increased risk of life-threatening complications.
What it does
Pager-Rx is a user-friendly integrated digital platform designed to streamline prescription management, inventory tracking, and pharmacy connectivity, ultimately improving patient health outcomes through pharmaceutical care.
It leverages:
- Artificial intelligence for adherence tracking
- Cloud-based inventory management systems
- Secure blockchain for prescription authenticity and data security
Simply put, Pager-Rx offers an easy route to obtaining needed medications without the usual hassle through:
● A Prescription Manager
● Pharmacy Marketplace and Logistics Service
● Teleconsultation
● Health and Drug Education
● Health Analytics and Personalized Recommendations
● USSD Feature
How we built it
We built Pager-Rx using a combination of modern AI, streamlined UX design, and fast cloud deployment:
AI-Powered Prescription Assistant
We used LangChain, Pinecone, and Google Generative AI to create a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system that can answer medication-specific questions, especially for antimalarial drugs. It provides users with accurate dosage schedules, including exact dose times based on prescription standards.
Structured Drug Database
We created and formatted a prescription document for easy parsing. This contains drug names, age-specific dosages, special administration notes, and durations. It’s indexed into Pinecone and used by the chatbot for fast retrieval.
Streamlit Interface
For the frontend, we used Streamlit to build a lightweight, responsive web interface that users can interact with easily, even on mobile. It also supports chatbot Q&A, search, and future marketplace features.
Environment & Configuration
We managed API keys and environment variables using .env and config.toml, ensuring easy redeployment and scalability.
Deployment
The app was deployed on Render, giving us a stable and shareable cloud URL, with auto-rebuild on updates for CI/CD convenience.
Challenges we ran into
A major challenge we've faced is funding. We need resources to transition our web app into a mobile app—so our prescription manager can run seamlessly on smartphones.
We’ve also encountered resistance from community pharmacies when trying to get them to adopt our inventory manager and provide access to their stock data. Logistics remains a hurdle as well.
Nevertheless, we believe these challenges can be overcome with our design strategy, once we secure enough funding.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Winning the Innotech 3.0 Innovation Challenge : This validated our idea as one with real-world value and far-reaching impact.
- Pilot Testing : We've entered the pilot phase, and individuals have been testing our Prescription Manager with encouraging feedback.
What we learned
Since the idea was conceived in 2022, we’ve grown into a working product in 2025. Winning a hackathon and positively impacting lives taught us that our ideas are valid.
All we need is commitment, grit, and funding to realize our vision. We’ve made mistakes, like trying to implement every feature at once, but we’ve since refined our roadmap into smaller phases and a larger picture.
We're still early in our journey, but we have what it takes to go far. Our team is committed and has a solid mix of domain knowledge in pharmacy and healthcare plus technical skills to deliver on our vision.
What’s next for Pager-Rx
Now in the Pilot Phase, we plan to put our MVP through rigorous testing to spot gaps and identify strengths to build upon. With funding and support, we aim to transition Pager-Rx from a prototype to a fully functional, market-ready healthtech solution.
Key Immediate Priorities:
Technical Development
Hire a skilled development team to build frontend/backend infrastructure, focusing on secure, scalable features like the prescription management system and Nigerian-tailored inventory database.User Testing & Pilot Deployment
Collaborate with selected pharmacies and healthcare providers to pilot the system, validating usability, impact, and data security.Regulatory Alignment
Begin engagement with regulatory authorities and stakeholders to ensure compliance with pharmaceutical and data protection laws in Nigeria.Product Launch
Following a successful pilot, we’ll onboard users and partner with healthcare providers for a full launch while continuously optimizing the system.
We anticipate a 2-year timeline to achieve a standardized, wide-deployable product. This includes iterative testing, strategic partnerships, and development of a sustainable business model for long-term impact.
