Inspiration

Exam paas aate hi har student ek hi cheez feel karta hai — panic. "Kahan se shuru karun? Kaunsa subject pehle? Itne din mein sab kaise hoga?"

We have all been that student. Most students either study randomly — easy subjects first, hard ones left for the last night — or make huge study planners that they abandon by day two. Generic to-do apps don't help; they are passive checkboxes that don't understand exam deadlines or subject difficulty. No tool tells a student what to study TODAY, and why.

That gap became PadhaiPlan.

What it does

PadhaiPlan is a smart exam study planner that thinks like a helpful senior. You enter your exam date, daily study hours, and subjects (marked Hard / Medium / Easy) — it instantly builds a day-by-day plan, and every day tells you exactly what to study first, and why.

Two features make it truly "smart":

  • "Aaj kya padhun?" suggestion — analyses pending subjects, their difficulty, and days left to the exam, then recommends today's focus subject with a clear, human reason.
  • Difficulty-based time allocation — harder subjects automatically get more study slots, shown in a visual balance bar. No more wasting equal time on easy topics.

Plus: live exam countdown, Pomodoro focus timer, daily streak, celebration animations, progress tracking, and daily reminders — all designed to keep students consistent.

How we built it

  • Platform: 100% front-end web app (PWA) — a single self-contained HTML file. Runs on any phone, installs like an app on Android, and works fully offline.
  • Stack: HTML, CSS, vanilla JavaScript — no server, no login, no dependencies.
  • Smart engine: a rule-based scorer weighting difficulty (hard=3, medium=2, easy=1), remaining tasks and days-to-exam. No external API — the intelligence is in the logic, so every suggestion comes with an explainable reason.
  • Scheduler: largest-remainder allocation, so harder subjects get proportionally more slots while every subject gets time; slots spread evenly across days.
  • Storage: browser local storage — privacy-first, works with zero internet.

Challenges we ran into

  • Making the daily suggestion feel genuinely helpful — not just random — while keeping it fully explainable without any external AI API.
  • Designing fair time allocation: hard subjects need more slots, but easy subjects can't be starved entirely.
  • Keeping everything (timers, streaks, reminders, offline mode) inside one single HTML file with no backend.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • The product is already built and live — this is not just an idea on paper. Try it yourself!
  • A smart, explainable suggestion engine with zero server cost.
  • The whole app runs offline as an installable PWA — any student with a basic Android phone can use it for free.

What we learned

  • How to turn a real student pain-point into a structured solution using a Business Model Canvas (value proposition, customer segments, channels, revenue streams, cost structure).
  • How much "intelligence" you can build with pure logic and good rules — you don't always need heavy AI.
  • Designing for consistency (streaks, celebrations, reminders) matters as much as the plan itself.

What's next for PadhaiPlan

  • Cloud sync across devices
  • Subject-wise topic/chapter breakdown inside each subject
  • Study analytics — best time of day, most-skipped subject, predicted readiness
  • Group/class mode for teachers to assign and track plans
  • Regional language support (Hindi, Marathi and more)
