Hi! Saddened about the pandemic woes?

Inspiration

Airport security lines are a nightmare.

Long wait lines to check the carry-ons, slows the screening process and hence is a huge deal when it comes to the US travel misadventure!

Forcing travelers to dump more out of bags, sometimes without warning, likely confuses and anger fliers.

Not just for the travelers, the added efforts (many a times futile) of the TSA staff to check clear our carry-ons is a huge hassle as well.

What it does?

PackWise lets you click a picture of any item you intend to take with you in your travel and informs you if it allowed in your check-in luggage or in your cabin luggage. It also informs you if it is not allowed by customs if you are an international traveler.

How we built it?

Front end is built in react and backend is built in flask. The app is hosted on Google App Engine. We made use of Google Vision API to identify the objects in the image. Then we made a rule based algorithm from the labels to identify the item's category. From the TSA and CBP websites we get the information about which items are prohibited. We made use of that in our backend service.

Challenges we ran into

The challenge was that the categories provided by google vision API did not exactly map to the categories in TSA and CBP guidelines. So we had to do a lot of analysis for labels and which categories should they belong to.

Another challenge was the domestic and international customs differences. And we managed to incorporate that too.

Accomplishments we're proud of

We are proud of making something that is working end-to-end and ready to use at this moment.

What we learned?

We learned a great deal about what happens in a DL project after the modeling is done. Using the model for a real-time application is a different ball game all together. We had 2 beginner hackers and a lot of new technologies to learn. W learned google cloud platform and google app engine on the fly.

Here's what's next for PackWise

PackWise will incorporate more items and more countries. Also, it will be available in many more languages.
