## Inspiration

At small companies, accounting always got left for later, which we both personally experienced. That's why we built Pacioli, the simplest way to get your accounting done, all on one collaborative canvas. Pacioli autonomously handles books, chase vendors, writes reports, and learns over time based on your patterns.

What it does

Pacioli takes in your bank (Capital One’s Nessie), Stripe and QuickBooks (bills you owe and invoices owed to you) and runs the back office on one live canvas. A Bookkeeper agent sorts every transaction, matches it to a bill, voids duplicates and posts it to the ledger, with a reason for each call. Anything it isn’t sure about goes to “Needs you” with the evidence and a suggested answer, where it can email the vendor and follow up for you. Your answers become patterns it uses next time. A Reports agent turns the ledger into a weekly P&L and charts you ask for in plain English.

How we built it

The app is built using SpacetimeDB. This allows for a simple collaborative environment where events need to be synced in real time and shown upon every change. The agents run on Factory's Droid API and runs with a cloud computer. Vendor emails go through AgentMail and the frontend uses React & React Flow for the canvas. We integrated Capital One's Nessie to mock messy bank input data. The project was designed in Figma.

Challenges we ran into

Getting the factory agents to run in the cloud with its own computer was interesting. We couldn't find any open-facing Factory Cloud Agent SDK, so we built our own. Furthermore, we spent a lot of time to get the user experience write and landed upon the flow design.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

Everything works end to end and is very simple to swap with live data. It is a self improving system that learns off of the decisions of items initially flagged for human review.

What we learned

Bookkeeping is routine, and what matters is the small set of judgement calls. Once you keep track of the judgement calls, you can use patterns to automate the book keeping.

What’s next for Pacioli

Connecting real bank and accounting accounts, adding more agents for payroll, taxes and month-end close, and testing it with a real small business.
