Inspiration

The project was inspired by the need to make store management more engaging and efficient for OXXO managers. Traditional methods often feel repetitive and static, so we aimed to gamify the experience, making learning and management both fun and impactful. By integrating interactive features, we wanted to reduce friction in employee training and transform routine tasks into engaging challenges.

What it does

Oxxolipsis is a gamified store management platform designed for OXXO. It combines a dynamic web application with an interactive video game to:

  • Help managers track store operations and performance in real time.
  • Train employees through engaging challenges that simulate real OXXO tasks.
  • Record and update data instantly in a central database, making learning measurable and fun.

How I built it

  • Frontend: Built a responsive web application with interactive dashboards that followed a format and palette.
  • Backend & Database: Designed a database to store operational data and connect it with in-game progress, as well as to the website.
  • API Layer: Implemented endpoints to allow seamless communication between the web app, the game, and the database, ensuring real-time updates.
  • Gamification Engine: Developed mini-games where employees complete tasks (e.g., inventory, customer service, sales scenarios), updating the database in real time.
  • Collaboration Tools: Used Git and GitHub for version control, branching, and pull requests to streamline teamwork.

Challenges I ran into

  • Balancing fun gameplay mechanics with realistic business operations.
  • Ensuring real-time synchronization between the game and the database without lag.
  • Overcoming merge conflicts and coordination issues while working as a team with Git/GitHub.
  • Managing time constraints, since building both a game and a management platform within the project timeline required careful prioritization.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Won first place in the class competition for creativity, technical implementation, and impact.
  • Delivered a fully functional gamified solution that both entertains and trains employees.
  • Achieved real-time data recording and consultation through gameplay.
  • Learned how to bridge the gap between software engineering and business training in a practical setting.

What I learned

  • The power of gamification to boost motivation and learning in corporate environments.
  • How to integrate front-end, back-end, and database systems into one cohesive product.
  • How to use Git and GitHub effectively for teamwork, version control, and conflict resolution.
