Inspiration
We've all experienced the frustration of trying to access healthcare services on campus, and we wanted to make a platform that addressed those limitations.
What it does
Our application has 3 main parts:
- Real time access to health center services (ie. booking appointments, messaging health providers)
- Transparent pricing alongisde bill payment suite
- Convenient access to personal health records
How we built it
Frontend: Node.js, React.js, Vite, Mantine Backend: Firebase Authenication, Real-Time Database, Storage
Challenges we ran into
-Backend integration for multiple different components and datatypes. -Choice of backend platform - Firebase over MongoDB because of wider breadth of resources and more convenient integration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Real time messaging connected to frontend
- Overall UI improvments (much prettier than https://health.rice.edu )
What we learned
- Lots of structural details about Firebase (collections, authentication, buckets)
- Integrating different components, trouble-shooting, division of labor
- Understanding gaps in resources on campus, through shared experiences
What's next for Owl Health Portal
- Fleshing out provider experience
- Full integration with TouchPay
- Better HIPPA compliance for health records and messaging
