Inspiration
Talking to the different people we met and finding the common ground of all the problems they told us.
What it does
For simplicity, our demonstration blockchain system is between only two computers which allows them to share data between themselves privately and securely. When connected to the chain, hundreds of computers could receive this data simultaneously and the users would have instant, credible, access to raw data and refined results alike, allowing for more collaboration, more breakthroughs, and a more secure network for data and research so that science and tech companies can rest easy, knowing that their data is readily available but secure.
How we built it
Downloaded multichain and configured it to meet the needs we found in our problem. This took a long time and a lot of effort to get it to meet our needs and wants. We ran into some bumps and had to change the ideal configurations a bit but we got it to work.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into the challenges of coming up with the idea, and making the program work. The time crunch was a huge challenge we didn't come up with the idea until late last night then spent all morning just connecting the two computers. We finally got them connected around 12 then spent two hours sending data and reading it. The hexadecimal is just plain numbers and letters to translate to what we can normally read you will have to pull up another website and just paste the data into it and let it translate it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the fact that we got the information sent between the two computers. We were able to change the configurations to make it easier to access.
What we learned
We learned many things over this weekend. We learned how to setup and use a block chain. I (Emily) learned how to use command line, python, html and using the block chain system as well as the hexadecimal system of sending information. We also learned a lot about how the block chain system and theory works.
What's next for Ovonel
Integrate the networked data with existing genomics research tools. Create a user friendly interface with search bar and catalog of information to make finding specific data or authors quick and easy. While an entry in the chain cannot be modified, we would like to let users add and distribute comments and annotations about the data.
