Inspiration

Heavily influenced by our friends living abroad overseas alone, we wanted to provide a platform for them to have a sense of homeliness and to reduce the loneliness that they are facing.

What it does

OverseasKaki allows Singaporeans overseas to find things that are local abroad. Reviews are made on how "Singaporean" a location is while allowing users to share their experience at the same time. This allows Singaporeans overseas to find places that would remind them of home and gain insights on places to visit from a person with the same cultural backing, helping long-term travelers feel more homely.

The application also promotes cultural preservation by ensuring that Singaporeans will always be able to revert the resources available through the review, ensuring that a sense of belonging is present throughout their stay overseas.

How we built it

The project was built on Figma.

Challenges we ran into

1) Identifying the customer journey as none of us have lived abroad overseas alone.

2) How to incorporate the application in a real-world setting and allowing the application to succeed. As it heavily relies on customer reviews, having a large user base is ideal but hard to obtain.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Identifying the pain points of the user we are trying to target and coming up with a solution that we are very proud of.

What we learned

We learned how to apply design thinking concepts to the project by looking at things from our target audience's perspective. Our team also explored ways to improve the design to be more user-friendly for the users.

What's next for OverseasKaki

There are several functionalities that can be incorporated to improve and encourage users to get started on the application. These include:

  1. Points Allocation to encourage Singaporeans overseas to make optimal reviews
  2. Messaging between users, to allow them to make new friends and stay connected
  3. Profile page to allow users to post and share their experiences of living in a foreign country with other users of the application
