What is OverSEAr?

It's an entertaining and educational game about invasive species similar to Paper's Please by Lucas Pope

Inspiration

  • Most of us live next to invasive species everyday
  • Most of us live next to invasive species every day. We lived in NC our entire lives and thought the kudzu was just part of the North Carolina landscape. It took almost 16 years before we realized the harm from this plant. We wanted to create a game that helps people discover harmful species they may not know about.
  • We were also heavily inspired by the game Paper's Please by Lucas Pope

How we built it

We used Aesprite to create each sprite and background. For all game development, we used the Godot Engine, specifically the 2D editor.

Challenges we ran into

None of us had ever used Godot before, so we ran into efficiency issues and difficulties coding certain aspects. The overlaying of smaller, persistent scenes was a big roadblock that took a significant amount of time to navigate.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We actually a functioning game! Bao Truong and Lucas Packard participated last year and failed to make something that functioned very well.

What we learned

We learned how to effectively use Godot and a lot of different aquatic species as well as invasive species in certain locations.

What's next for OverSEAr

We currently plan to expand this project into a full release on steam, adding more features and minigames.

How to Play!
